I saw Hazleshould posted yesterday on a very light 22" Zildjian A Avedis crash/ride and how they're been out of stock at Zildjian for quite some time now. That seems to be the usual when Zildjian is getting ready to discontinue a model.

Have these had their time and no longer selling well? I think I have the lightest 22" I've seen at 2308g, and while it's been an amazing cymbal, it's one of my least used. May need to rediscover it. It works amazingly well as a crash with my KCons, but I've been using a 22" Renaissance in it's place.

I also have a 15" hi hat bottom paired with a 15" K Sweet top. The K Sweet bottoms are too heavy to me, and the Avedis has been the perfect match for it. Very pleased with it also.

Who's still using this line?

Here are my 2 videos.....

The list of Temporarily Unavailable Items dated 5/16/22 is attached and yes it includes the A Avedis series (not to be confused with A Zildjian series). It also includes the Kerope series, and lots of other things.

I bought a slightly used 18" A Avedis cymbal in order to add it to my sample of 18" cymbals for sonic comparisons. It is a fair reproduction of late 50s early 60s A Zidjiian cymbals as far as I can tell.

I was also checking that the rolled in trademark stamp is indeed the die we call the 60short. It is. This adds more to the silly state of naming when what we call a 60s stamp was in use for more years outside the years 1960-1969 than in that decade. Currently known years of use for the "60s" stamps 196? to 1978, then 2016 to 2022. Perhaps not as big a mistake as calling the series A Avedis and confusing many people as well as online searches. :dontknow:

Wow. Hope the ultra hammered chinas don't get the axe too. Zildjian always discontinues their best stuff. Looking at you Oriental Classic Chinas!

I have an 18" A Avedis Crash (1299 g) that's low pitched but has a stronger attack than my A-series 18" Thin Crash (1249 g). Both are "keep till I die" cymbals and are currently up on my drumset.

I have A Avedis 15" hats, and an 18, 19, and 21. I put two Bosphorus rivets in the 19. I love all of them and they work very well mixed with my K Cons and K Custom Darks.

All the cymbals companies are plagued with too many offerings, overlap and marketing confusion… a SKU glut that I imagine most would love to get rid of, but when you tell the Sales force (or A&R) what’s on the chopping block, they throw a fit. “Don’t get rid of that… don’t get rid of this… we have nothing in that category/price point … such-‘n-such loves that, etc etc”. But inventory that doesn’t move gets taxed at the end of the year irregardless… hits the margins.

Things like the “Rarities” program were great for business, since you can rerelease a product that actually had some built up demand/interest over the years, and 100% of it was sold before it left the factory… and you can have something “exciting” to promote. Models done in limited batches and probably improved quality then when it was drearily forgotten in the catalog…

I guess the kind of vintage cymbals don't fit with Zildjian's new marketing and brand strategy announced earlier today.

Either they lost their source for whatever they use to patina them, or they fired Paul Francis before anyone thought to ask him how to make them……

I heard rumors from 2112 drum shop that Zach Danziger came by and said they are reworking the keropes, they may be doing the same with the avedis. So maybe they are going through a relaunch rather than being discontinued. Zach was involved in the design of the keropes and was apparently disappointed in the final production version, preferring some of the earlier prototypes.

I look forward to hearing some new Zildjian cymbals. It seems their 400th anniversary has involved more about t-shirts and social posts than musical instruments.

And despite my childish logo, I do quite like the Avedis Vintage cymbals. I was trying to source a paper-thin crash in the same style of a 14" from the late 50s that I lost due to keyholing gone mad, but it didn't happen.
