Can anyone recommend a ride cymbal that also works as a crash? I’m looking to lighten my load.

Weight is a factor, so:

For general purposes a lighter K Custom Dark;

For something that is darker and “jazzier” a 20” Kerope;

I also have a 20” older Sabian Duo Ride that works well as a dry crash ride.
(I would assume an Omni might work,
although I’ve never played one.)

Zildjian A Sweet Rides work.

I have a 22” new version A Medium Ride that crash as well, although, like the Sweet, it is not fast in execution.

Philo, if you outline what genres/applications you play perhaps we could curate our answers.

A Sabian AAX Stage Ride will crash nicely, as will a 20" Paiste 602 Medium Ride or a late model (redesign) Zildjian 20" A Ping Ride.

Tons of options, depending on desired brand. Zildjian literally makes both an A and K crash ride model. Otherwise, lighter vintage A Zildjians generally work. Other options might be Kerope, Avedis model (the more current version), Armand rides, and most K cons.

I’ve never been much for crash rides .
I like dedicated cymbals , so I’m no help here .

If I were on a budget:
Dream Bliss 20”

If I wanted Zildjian:
Thin 50’s 20” or thin 20" KCon Bounce, Renaissance, or Overhammered

If I wanted Paiste (bright):
18-20” 2002 or 602 Medium

If I wanted Paiste (complex):
20” Masters Dark Crash or Dark Ride

If I wanted Paiste (very dark):
21” Sig Light Dark

If I wanted extreme trash:
18" Meinl Dragon China Crash

Almost limitless options depending on your preferences with regard to volume level, trash, budget, etc.

Almost any thin ride cymbal can be crashed. Go out and whack a few.

I played 50 years without a crash cymbal. Just two rides, a thin 18 on the left and a 20 or 21 on the right. Never had any complaints from the groups I played with.

As was mentioned, the Turkish rides crash pretty nicely. My present setup has a 20" Byzance and an 18" Agop. I often play with just one of them if it's a small venue.

My A. Zildjian 18” crash/ride with rivets has been a go to for years, as well as without rivets.

I recently got a nice used K Constantinople 19” crash ride I really like. A lot.

Maybe some context? Genre? Venues? Expected volume level?
Agreed that some musical context is needed for this question.

On the other hand there is that school of thought -gryphon- that says any fine
sounding ride cymbal makes a great crash if you hit it hard enough, and the right way.
Davo has a good, and helpful, point as well. I've never really meet a 'Crash-Ride' that
turned out to be a satisfying ride cymbal. And sometimes not even a satisfying crash
cymbal. What was I thinking when I bought this thing?

I have two Zildjian K Sweet Rides, a 21" and the 23". Both are great ride cymbals.

The 21" crashes nicely, but the 23" just goes clang. Not unexpected.

This is the one for me (no rivets in mine). At louder gigs, this is a great 19” crash that pairs well with my K Dark thin 17”. At quieter gigs, this serves is a great ride with a clear bell and a crash that opens up quickly (i.e., with a light touch). Just don’t expect a ping ride sound out of it.

While we really need more information about what it´s going to be used for I´ll throw the Sabian AA Bash Ride in the ring. I have the 24" and it´s a glorious crash ride.

I have a 20" A Zildjian Crash Ride (2031 g) that works well in both roles, although less so as a crash in quieter situations. I also have a 20" Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash (1891 g) that does work well as a crash and a ride in quieter situations. Both were bought brand-new within the last couple of years.

Paiste "Mediums". It depends on what you've already got, but if you're with Paiste you can crash their "medium ride" or "medium" in any line pretty well.
