As I've gotten older I have become more finicky on pedal beater weight and not all company's even list them. I prefer between a 72 -82 gram weight and, after using felt for so many years, I'm looking for more attack that I believe a wood beater can offer. Does anyone play a wood beater and what would you recommend? I like the look of the Danmar Aldridge model but that black shaft is for a much larger bass than my 20". I would have too much post below the lock screw and I'm not taking out the Dremel to burn through discs to cut through hardened steel. Anyone use a light weight wood beater? Louie

I have on occasion used an inexpensive cheap red round ball beater when I need to be loud. Otherwise I use a Pearl beater it has 4 sides 2 felt and two hard plastic. I can use same beater for multiple purposes.

I've been using the Gibraltar SC-3262 for a while:

72-82 gr seems on the low side, the wooden Gibraltar is 93 gr and my Pearl and a generic round felt one both 88 gr.

I use the lightweight wood beater from Low Boy and love it. I don’t like heavy beaters but need good attack playing rock so this is the perfect middle ground.
I forgot about them and I own the felt one but it's not sharp enough. They do make a solid wood one though. Good call.

I really like the Danmar JR Robinson square red beater when I need the oomph that only a wood beater can provide . The corners are all rounded to protect the head . It has a large impact point so it really accentuates the bottom end .

A friend gifted me a walnut beater with a felt strip around the middle made by Cherry Hill drums - extremely well made and sounds and looks great .

I would probably get one of the Danmar metal impact patches before I got a wood beater. I had those on my bass drums when I was younger and they did add a bit of a click to the attack mimicking a wood beater. I feel like a wood beater on its own would begin to dent the bass drum head. Considering BD heads are $50-60 and wood beaters are $25ish, a patch is $10 and could give you the sound you are looking for while not causing premature damage to a perfectly good head.

Thats just my $.02

I’ve been using two wood beaters for a while and love them. No noticeable weight increase or difficulty playing. I mean no noticeable weight increase in the pedals, not in me personally. That’s an entirely different matter.

But I have also tried different beater types with hard plastic and some of them seem to produce just as much volume as the wood.

I was about to order that one without the felt strip but the shipping to NY from California is $46. That would make the beat a cost poe $92 before the 8.375% tax rate. Too steep for me. I could own several for that amount.

I broke two bass drum heads using a wood beater. Probably had Moleskins on the bass drum...
Only beater that ever broke on me was a Tama King Beat from years ago. Screw on beater and the screw loosened and the beater flew off on the gig and the rod...you know the rest.

They were all the rage before Beater Badges weren't they. I even knew guys that made their own out of felt and duct tape.

I use a wood beater, but it's an old Sonor one from the '70's. It's got zero to do with volume as far as I'm concerned. I still use moleskin too. I don't like beater patches, I feel like they kill the drum head feel and sound. But that's just me.

I have other beaters too.
