So starting to look for the best clip on tom mics, been using Sennheiser 421 and I always struggle for positioning them since the are so large, love the sound but wondering if clip on mics out there will make me not sorry that I parted with them

Sennheiser e604

These have become the "57" of clip-on mics, I see them almost always at clubs that provide mics. They sound great and are pretty durable. This is with the assumption you are talking about live use. If studio I think you'd be sorry losing the 421's

I like the e604’s as much as any mic I’ve used in my studio for toms and snare. The have a surprisingly full, punchy sound. I’d give them a hearty thumbs up for studio use.

Beta98AD/C. They sit in a mix extremely well, and put out exactly what you put in, with not much coloration and much less proximity effect than I've seen from most dynamics.

I use 421's and have no intention of losing them. Best clip I've ever found for them is the LP Claw. You can get the mics positioned just about anywhere - even a large mic like the 421.

I think the e604s are great on rack toms, but pretty lacking on floor toms. The mounts are great.

I like the Beyerdynamics. I forget the model number. Small gooseneck that has a robust clamp that grips the rim.

As mentioned, the e604 is a great one. I've had my own for about 3 years now I think. They won't compare with the 421s, but they're great for their price range, they're durable, and as Chris said, their ubiquitousness means sound guys can dial them in pretty quick since they know how they sound. There are better mics out there, but these are solid workhorses and not too pricey.

Good info that they work well in studio, I've just never seen them in the few studios I've worked. I have one 904 that I got on close out for $110 shipped, wish I had bought a pair of them though.

Are people not getting the 904 for any reason other than the extra cheddar ?

Those mounts were deal breaker for me. I don't want my mics to be shaking/moving all over the place like that.

I've always used mic stands because claw mic mounts can easily transmit vibration from the drums to the mics. A few months ago a friend was having problems getting a clean sound on his drums in his studio and after troubleshooting, he discovered that the issue was exactly the above: vibrations transferring from the drums to the mic mounts. After he moved the mics to stands the issue disappeared.

No matter which mics I use and what I mic with them, each mic always mounts to its own stand, and I make sure that no mic stands come in contact with any piece of drum hardware.

Dean,
You can't beat the sound of the Sennheiser MD421s on toms in the studio, but for live work, the Sennheiser e604s listed above can't be beat. They sound great, super lightweight, and super tough...they can take a stick blow without flinching. The best solution would be to start using them with the May Internal Mic platform...nothing beats that in my experience. However, I would not get rid of your classic MD421s for the studio. They might be a pain to position from time to time, but they are the industry standard sonically.

I really like the sE vmics. They sound great, Ive actually replaced my 57 on the snare with one. The mount is discreet, mics never in the way, and the price is right. Great mics....
