Cool.... you're probably further along with this jazz stuff than I am with the whole blues shuffle thing. I don't actually play any blues music and have no intention to start with that, though I realize that those basic skills can be useful for jazz, because here and there, there are tunes that work well with shuffle feels... and even if the basic tune isn't played as a shuffle, there's no reason that you can't play that feel though one or more of the solos. The more flavors you can bring to it the better. Of course that's going to be vice versa for you in that you may be able to get up to speed with a jazz shuffle fairly quickly, but less so for the real jazzy kinds of feels.

I’ve spent many nights playing blues gigs .
I love blues , just not all night long …

My teacher is in the host band at local jazz jam , he asked did I want to get up ?
I said heck no !! He replies “it’s just blues . “

I laughed………

I find it odd that you would struggle with a blues shuffle ???

It's that snapping motion of the left hand that gets me. That sort of move doesn't seem to come into play with much else that I do and so I haven't really developed that muscle. To really shed on that kind of thing though, I realize would be good because it would get my hands closer to being even, which they're clearly not. I unfortunately wasn't born with the gene for ambidextrousness so getting the hands really even has always been a bit of a struggle for me.

I think that one can get away without having that specific kind of technique and still play lots of styles well, other than the shuffle. but I still think that if you can do it well, it can give you some extra possibilities which would be useful for just about anything. Having more tricks up your sleeve is never a bad thing.

I would bet that a lot of pretty advanced players still can't do that one thing all that well. I would bet that Bill Bruford, one of my favorite drummers can't play a shuffle well. There isn't much of his that I've heard where that kind of technique comes into play and he admits to having a weak left hand... which is why he tends to play with the butt stick on that side...
