Dear all, thank you for all your help so far.
It has been invaluable!
In the end I went for the Dynasonic 7-lines (series No 5623) and I am very pleased with it. It did came with a fiberskyn head which I will replace with an ambassador.
Also planning in replacing the snare as there are some snares missing, and a new snare mount as now available.
This should fit right?

Also, on the hardware front, I found few stands reasonably priced (about $60 each) and a hihat with an original clutch.
Wondering if you could check them out and what your thoughts were on getting them or just use modern hardware in case these are not very functional, especially regarding the hi-hat.
Are these compatible with a fullerton 1974 drum I have?

I have the older swan leg version of that hi hat stand. It works great even with heavy cymbals. I’m not positive on the exact years for hardware if you are trying for a perfect match with your kit but they work fine.

They do sell replacement dynasonic snare wires now that should fit. Your snare frame appears complete, why do you want to replace it

[/QUOTE,

Hi @1988fxlr ,
Thanks for you comments.
The i have just noticed that in my old snare frame there is one little screw, out of the 2, missing and the snare sits a bit i on his side.
I guess is ok but id rather secure the whoke part considering it only cost 25$ more than the snare on his own.

I have now bought these 2 cymbal stands for 100$

Not sure if I should also get the vintage hihat stand as I am tempted to get the new one to have the vintage look whilst keeping the modern functionality (same for pedal and tom stand).
Q.1 does this sound reasonable?

I have now also have the possibility to get these 2 stands which appear to be older.

.
Could you guys help me understand their value and main differences between the two types (straight legs vs swan).

Yes
from around 18XXX on there were steel shells mixed in.
People get confused because in the Cook book the information is backwards.
Contrary to what the book says... all early shells were brass and from around mid 68 on steel was introduced.
not all were steel though... that is why it gets confusing.

@ThePloughman can speak on Fullerton era with more accuracy than myself.
Weren't the Powertone steel shell stainless steel; different than most regular steel shell drums? (Not magnetic)

Some were … I believe those were often polished and not chromed if I’m not mistaken.
But there were also carbon steel shells, aluminum shells etc.
There were still a bunch of brass shells coming out at the same time as well.
It’s a bit of a mess that CBS created.

Answers to your 3 questions.

Q1- It’s most likely early to mid 70’s. Rogers did sell these into the 80’s. Later 70’s into 80’s had the big R logo. Honestly I think you can find these drums in many sizes. It’s a common finish. You don’t need to rewrap drums. You’ll find this finish at a good price.
Q2- Drilling into drums could devalue the drums. If you do, put the hardware where Rogers would have, and take your time and do it right. But…. If it’s a players set that you’re gonna keep for a while, it’s yor prerogative. Just remember resale is always tough to get a good price if it’s been drilled out.
Q3- I think a Rogers superten, or matching wood powertone. Chrome Powertones are usually available at a fair price. Get and older one from the 60’s that are made of brass.

Good luck…. Rogers drums sound great. Enjoy!

Hi,
I wanted to thanks everyone for all the help and support with this project.
Has been a long process were I have learned a lot and from not knowing Rogers at all, I am now a fanatic!
I am particularly fascinating (obsessed rather) by the Swivomatic hardware.
I absolutely love it and it's so versatile..
I have picked up a few pieces along the way and had a bit of fun mixing and matching bits..
You might be horrified by the site of these.. but by adding a short cymbal arm extension to a cymbal stand you can actually turn it into a boom arm.
received_741078105753033.jpeg

See below the end result of my fullerton 9/22 label, 24, 13, 14 16 kit.. now I am after a covington one so i might be back here very soon!
One final question..
I have realised that the tom triple flanged hoops i have, is much thicker (2.3mm?).
I was going to replace it.. just wanted to confirm the the original hoop on a 1974 kit was 1.6mm and if any other brands would work as well (i.e. similar Ludwig 1.6mm, 13" 6 holes triple-flanged hoop).
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again everyone

Hey…. Congrats! I love seeing a set with all the bells and whistles. You did well. You found a lot of good stuff.
That’s the beauty of collecting these drums. I’ve found that Rogers collectors are some of the most passionate collectors. I’m lucky to have a close friend that knows Rogers inside and out. GrandpaCleve….He’s been collecting Rogers, knows the history, owns, and has owned almost every kind of Rogers drum made. And B&BLugMug knows everything Rogers, and has cool videos on YouTube. I’m waiting for the Rogers podcast. And… the next Rogers book.
You’re in good hands. There are many here that will appreciate and answer your questions.
Your set looks amazing!
Enjoy
Btw…. Any brass Rogers snare, and any size will be great with your set.

Thanks!
I am following grandapacleve on ebay.. keeping an eye on his inventory and B&BLugMug has been ever so helpful! VERY grateful, id like to see his video... what's the name of the channel?

Re: snare i have found a 7-line dyna (see pics below). The prev. owner purchased it from steve maxwell, I was told.
Wondering if you could speculate on the year of manufacturere?

..but also looking for a powertone COB.
There is no/v.limited choice in UK and on ebay is a mindfiled and is hard to distinguish (at least for me) a good from a bad deal.
If you guys have a decent powertone on sale (genuine parts etc), please give me a shout or point me in the right direction.
Id be ever so grateful.

Thanks again everyone.

I’d say it’s 1964 or 65. It’s a four digit serial number, and the 7 lines. You got a good one. I have one close to that serial number. I got a small Powertone collection. 3 of them. One is just a classic Cleveland 4 digit serial number, another Cleveland 4 digit serial number with the older clockface throw off, and a rare 10 lug prototype Cleveland Powertone. I got that prototype from GradpaCleve. It’s one of my favorites.
I’ll keep a lookout for Powertone’s. They’re easy to find. Just wait for a good one. Honestly they’re no bad ones. I got a Superten, and it sounds great. It’s not bass, but why not. Cool to have different stuff, different sound, and different era. All Rogers from the 60’s, and even into the 70’s are great drums.
Me…I prefer 60’s. You’ll definitely be buying other Rogers sets. They’re like potato chips…. Ya can’t just have one!

Here’s a pic of your Dyna’s brother.

Just so gealous.. there is so much gear in the states.. (in the assumption you are in the states).
My wife asked me to take her to Newyork for her 40s bday.. and all I could think of was " brilliant!
I will finally be able to go to steve maxwell shop!!" Which I am sure is making me a really bad man.. and a worst husband!!
I think @GradpaCleve has a lovely powertone but in steel? Whilst for my first one I wanted to get a brass one.. possibly from the 60s as you also said.

That Dyna-Sonic came out of Covington in 1965
At some point in the middle of that year the Swivomatic strainer (flat sided Permatension) found its way on the assemblers table.
Your drum snuck in before that and wears the "clockface" clear logo Permatension that first showed up in 1963.
It was set up at the plant by my dear friend Jerry Shields... he was the only person there to set up Dyna Sonic drums between 1961 and 1969.
He was hired at the Covington plant in 1960

COB Powertone drums are readily available and are wonderful drums... one will find you.

Steve no longer has a shop in NY
It is now a shop called Good Hands Drum Shop and is owned by Jess Birch who worked for Steve for many many years.
Definitely worth visiting
Enjoy your trip.

Well… you can get a steel one, and get a brass. Nice to have variety. Get a Powertone brass beauty 60’s, and have that at home. Then take the steel one out to gigs, or jamming with friends. I love spending other people’s money.
Well… you’re not a bad husband taking your wife anywhere for her 40th. But… I live in Jersey close to New York. NYC is pretty dirty and lousy of late. Plenty of nicer places in Jersey or New York…. Stay clear of the city. Or a day trip to the city.

My God! @B&BLugMug — are you Anthony’s?!
I’ve watched almost all of your videos!
I absolutely love that channel — it’s such an honour to connect!
Thanks so much for all the information you share, and for the incredible work you put into the channel.

I’ve learned so much from it (and I keep learning — I often have to watch the same video a few times because they’re so packed with info!).
They’re also really entertaining and beautifully presented!

I also loved the video from your childhood with the Italians setting off fireworks — it made me feel a bit nostalgic too, as I’m Italian but have been living in the UK for the past 15 years.

Thanks again!
Francesco

Thank you for your kind words and support brother.
Glad you enjoy the channel.
Are we connected on Facebook ?
How did you see the Mt Carmel Feast video?
... some good videos coming soon...

Hey thanks for the advice re: NYC.. will keep that in mind!
Difference between steel and brass is that steel is louder?
Also between powertone and dynasonic (Besides the increased sensitivity from dyna?)
