I've heard tale after tale of people digging through wuhan dogs until they find a gem, and there was a gem of a 10" splash in my local music shop the other day, wow! It had everything, trash, musicality, punch and projection all rolled into one! If I'd had the cash on me I would have bought it right there and then! It'll probably be gone by the next time I'm in, I'd order one online if they all sounded like that, but of course Wuhan's notorious for how inconsistent they are :(

My 12" Mini China was a dog. Very bright and ringy and gongy. I also tried a bunch of larger Wuhan Chinas when trying to search for a particular dark, trashy sound, and none of them were to my taste. Varying degrees of overly loud and gongy.

The new wuhan traditionals are really nice sounding for the money.

Never tried a Wuhan splash but I have an 18" Wuhan China that I love. It has rivets in it. Speaks very quickly and is totally trashy. No gonginess whatsoever. The only other china I've owned that I liked was an 18" Paiste 505. I quickly tired of both my 20" 2002 Novo China and my 20" A. Zildjian china.

Here's a trick that seemed to work well for a friend of mine.

He was a Mackie rep and assigned exclusively to Guitar Center. So everybody knew him. What he would do is go in and see if there was a new shipment of Wuhan splashes in and if there was he would get them all out and put them on the counter. Then he would take one at a time and spin just slightly like a frisbee a few feet out in front of him on the carpet, paying VERY close attention to the sound the cymbal made when it hit the floor. I watched him do this more than once. Depending on the sound (and once you saw this you could tell the difference) he would pick and choose.

Once he'd narrowed down to about 5 or 6 top choices then he'd put them on a stand and hit them. He always got a good sounding splash that way.

Wow, I am suprised they let him throw the cymbals. I have a 22" Wuhan China that sounds amazing. I would like to see that rep try to throw this one like a frisbee. M.

How is the 18" Dan? I don't recall seeing a topic about it. How does it compare to the 16", you seemed pretty excited about that one!

Bigger wash, low fundamental tone. Me likey but I really won't know until I play it on a gig.

Here's a clip of the end of Pride and Joy by SRV where I hitting it pretty hard especially at the end of the song. This is the 16".

Sounds great there! Not usually my kind of china (trash yes, but about a billion times more sustain for me), but then again I use mine a bit differently to that. In that context I love it :occasion5:

Thanks but I've found the Wuhans really have minimal amounts of sustain, compared to all the others I've used (HH's, Orientals, Hi and Low Boys).

That's what I meant. I think I phrased it wrong, I meant I WANT much more sustain than that. If you put that china in the exact way I play mine I think it wouldn't quite work, and likewise my one would most likely just sound too messy where you use it!

Gotcha!

I bought one a while ago blindly. I was incredibly suprised at what I got, especially considering I didn't even spend $30.
