I have ordered a tom from this company - they distribute Keller shells. They have asked me what edge I would like - double 45 or standard offset. I understand the double 45; but what is 'standard offset'? I'm tring to emulate a Rogers Cleveland sound. I always thought Rogers were closest to double 45 . . . am I wrong?

You want a 5 or 6 ply maple shell with 8 or 10 ply re-rings. Inner bevel should be 45* almost all the way to the outer edge with a slight round-over cut on that outer edge. The result is a fairly sharp edge with a narrow apex. That was the way these Cleveland era Rogers I restored were originally.

The shells should be fine: http://www.kellershells.com/p-vmaple.php

Thing is that I don't think AIT Wood do 'custom' bearing edges. Looks like the double 45 has more of a flat edge area. I suppose I could ask them if they could do it more as you suggest. I'm in Australia - I have not much chance of many people here knowing what I'm talking about.

Sure it would be easier for them to use the Vintage Maple shell which already has re-rings but I'm pretty sure those old Rogers were all Maple plies...and as you know Keller made the shells back then. That's why I suggested a traditional all maple Keller shell with re-rings added which would be closer to the original shell. When all said and done you'll probably be close enough the way you're going. Gary at Precision could make you a clone the right way, heck even I've made them.
Best Wishes

Thanks for the posts Jimmy. I was going by The Rogers Book, which says that my drums are 3 ply maple/poplar. Don't think anyone makes a 3 ply shell anymore but for what I want; I thought the Vintage Maple looked ok. I guess I would have gone with Precision but Keller steered me to aitwood.com.

Well there you go. The Vintage Maple shell will be the best choice then. I've purchased from Aitwood and their great to deal with. I think they'll cut whatever edge you want. Make sure you post pics here of this project.

I sure will - thanks again.

I'm pretty sure Gladstone is now making 3-ply shells.

They have something like a 25 or 50 shell minimum order now last I checked.

Yes, I did check them out - 25 shells. I looked for companies that stock them. I suppose C&C would do it but I think it would be expensive. Latest in the saga - I have emailed Gary at Precision. If he can get the shell, I'll get it from them and get it wrapped too. They'll do a better job than me.

Good luck with it. Jeff Ballard bluffed his way to a "Camco" 10" by getting a DW shell and putting the right badge on it. DW are a way off Oaklawn Camcos but it seemed to work. i'm sure yours'll be just fine.

3-ply was used only in the early 60's. By the Dayton era they had gone to 5-ply. Should be 5-ply w/5-ply rings, and the edge as described above. Precision Drum can make exactly what you want.

I did contact Precision but the quote was way out of my range at the moment. I went with Aitwood and it's shipping tomorrow. Keller recommended them so I feel it will be fine. I need to buy some wrap for a whole kit; so I'll wait to wrap it myself and include it in that order. Looking forward to hearing it . . .

I was just about to order a few things from AIT. Their prices are way low. So much I was even wondering if they're legit. I'm glad to hear that they are.

I've been to AIT's warehouse a number of times. It's across the street from Aquarian Drumheads. It is a huge warehouse full of all kinds of curved wood products. If you talk to them on the phone, you can probably get them to cut a bearing edge just like you want. You could probably contact Jimmy Ford at Ford drums to get the work done. I understand that it was Jimmy who got AIT into the drum shell business. You might try contacting Pork Pie too.

They have a ten shell minimum order, though.

If you still need the edges done, check with Steve from Evetts Drums. He is in Sydney and is a great guy.
