So I just finished practice and after about an hour playing my behind hurts!! So think it's time to upgrade my throne. I used to have a DW 5000 round throne which was ok for gigging but them days are behind me. I now just jam out in my music room at home. I made the comment last year that I wanted a tractor style throne so Christmas morning under the tree my wife had bought me a Gibraltar tractor style throne. Bless her heart and I love her but she just don't know..lol I really have tried to like it for the last 10 months but can't do it anymore. I think I have it narrowed down between the roc n soc or tama 1st chair. Before I purchase I would like to get the opinions of ppl that own either or even a brand and model I have overlooked. I also just seen you can purchase just the roc n soc top for only $80. Would that fit on the lower I have now?

Here are a few pics of my current throne.

I own a Roc N Soc nitro and a Tama Ergo rider - both are tractor style thrones . You really cannot go wrong with either for comfort .
I prefer the backrest on the Tama more than the Roc N Soc .

Since I started using these thrones any butt or back pain is gone .

Our church has the best one I've sat on. A Pearl with a backrest. I'm pretty sure it is this one (broken link removed) I have a broken tailbone and this thing was pretty awesome compared to mine, which is a tractor style/ergo that was like a private label sold at GC.

After my back surgery I purchased a Roc n Soc nitro with back rest. That was around 1999, still using the same throne today. Also purchased a Soundseat which I put on a Gibraltar tripod. Both are great...

I second the Roc N Soc nitro. I purchased all 3 of mine used, and ever since, seat and back pain are totally gone.

Tractor seats to me take away from the support you need under your thighs and put it sticking out from your crotch where you don't need it. I've found I prefer hard foam like an expensive sports car because with a soft seat, you end up sitting on the wood base beneath the cushion. I have a 40 year old hard foam round Tama that I still love. My soft tractor seat Roc and Sok, not so much. My favorite now is the Mapex.

I have both a Roc N Sock round seat and saddle seat. For me, the round seat works better. I get needles and pins in my legs from saddle seats (various models). I haven't invested in a back rest--though they work great for me. I've been through a few drum stools over the years, one of my favourites was a Tama mid-70's throne. Can't remember the model, threaded post --which I still prefer -- but very functional and comfortable (for its time).

There seems to be 3 different diameter throne mounts, depending on the brand, but if your seat has the wrong one it's pretty easy to swap out the base from the seat you're replacing.

I have a couple retro fit Soundseat tops that I was using on regular Tripp’s bases and I also have the hydraulic breakdown version. The breakdown model is great but the base is pretty wide and doesn’t pack up in anything I have so for gigs I bought a hydraulic rocnsoc base and use it with a retro top and rocnsoc backrest. Works great for me!

I've owned & played on just about everything out there & I always come back to my Roc-n-Socs. I think the round version is the best for the same reason Patrick mentions.

A few quick thoughts:

1) Spindle Base is superior because they stay put & don't bounce our deflate like hydraulic ones do. They also travel better.
2) Avoid thrones with 4 legs as they often have a Wobbly Barstool effect on less than perfect stages. A tripod always sits flat ;-)
3) I owned both Pearl & Tama models previously mentioned & had issues with both not staying solid while playing & sold em.
4) Soundseat's are really nice & comfy, but large & more difficult to pack & travel.

I pretty much made this same post last year with back issues.
Rock n soc nitro now and it's great.
One weird thing is I guess it's a lot wider than the round thrones I'd always used and it's tricky to get up and out of the kit. I guess my floor tom is so close in.
