I've been to lots of shows over the years, but my favorite place was probably the Front Row Theater in Cleveland. Theater in the round, about 3000 seater, with a revolving stage. Not a bad seat in the house.

It was there I saw SpiroGyra, VSOP (with Tony, Herbie, Ron, and Wynton), Oak Ridge Boys, AWB, Frank Zappa, Rufus and Chaka Kahn, and even Eddie Murphy. And no, not all on the same night. :)

The Tweeter Center (or whatever it's called now) in Mansfield, MA. Lots of energy, great crowds - I have seen 3 Rush shows there, as well as Roger Waters on the DSOTM tour. Fantastic sound there.

What is the best place you have seen a concert? Red Rocks, Grand ol Opry, CBGB, ect......
No offense, but what a strange third choice. Wish I could have been to the first two! Never was there in CB's prime. It sucked when I was there in the 90's.

I have enjoyed concerts at Jones Beach out on Long Island, NY. With the right summer weather, it's magic. Radio City is a close second.

I really dig house concerts, where the artist is literally in front of you.

Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase circa 1985-1988....saw the likes of Blakey, Tony williams, Louis Bellson. Small bar atmosphere, very intimate.

Yeah Dan I agree w/ you. CB's is a dive of a place, but it does have a unique and impressive history. I wish I could have seen a few shows there.

I've been to hundreds of concerts in different venues over the years, but to me, Wilson Concert Hall at Glassboro State College (NJ-Now Rowan University) is the gold standard. I've never heard another hall that was even 1/10 as good. They used to have a great jazz concert series about 20 years ago that was sadly discontinued. In one season, I saw Chick Corea (electric and acoustic), Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Mann, Hugh Masakela, Oregon and Stanley Jordan. Great place.

Civic Opera House, Auditorium Theater, both in Chicago.
Symphony venues where I saw Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1968.
I played the Auditorium a couple times, sounds great on stage too.

saw the Miles tribute band w Wallace Rooney, Tony, Ron, Wayne and Herbie at The Barns at Wolf Trap in VA.
Awesome location and show!

Saw Jack Dejonette, Dave Holland and Pat Metheny at either Heinz Hall or the Benedem Center in Pittsburgh PA years ago. That was a great place.

Saw The Kinks, Jean Luc Ponty, The Outlaws at the Stanley Theatre in Pgh PA back in the 80s.
By far my favorite place for a concert

Catalinas bar in LA. Nothing beats a jazz club. Up front and right there...hear everything. Can't stand stadiums.

The Bronco Bowl in Dallas was my favorite venue to see bands. It was a 3500 seater in a half round configuration with 3 levels. The acoustics and sight lines were always good. I saw everyone there from the early 80's and onward. U2, Elvis Costello, The Smiths, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, R.E.M., The Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers - the list of great shows was endless. Sadly, it closed in 2003 and was demolished for a Home Depot :crybaby: Lot's of great memories...

Saw Buddy at Fillmore West, best sound would be Indiana University Auditorium where I saw Dr. John and Charlie Musselwite.

probably the Taberbacle in Atlanta. saw Alanis Morissette, Counting Crows and Graham Colton Band there on two different occasions. was front row as well. that place is magical.

I agree with Bun about those venues. It seems as though we're all pretty much writing about our home town venues. I really liked the concert sound at the Airie Crown Theater at the first version of McCormack Place on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago. I saw many great shows there, and had the opportunity to open for the Kinks there a few days before the seven year old structure burned to the ground on January 16, 1967.

Willie Nelson was the last owner of an old dilapidated smaller concert venue in Austin, Texas called the Austin Opera House. It closed down in 1990. I saw a great show there where Nick Lowe opened for Elvis Costello with James Burton playing lead guitar for this other Elvis. I thought that the sound was great for this more intimate setting.

1. The old Largo location on Fairfax (closed 2008)
2. McCabe's Guitar Shop
3. The new Largo @ The Coronet

Charlie Puzos Penthouse. Now defunct. The best Seattle club ever for jazz. 6 feet away from Tony Williams for 2 shows. Many other great nights as well.

The Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee, WI is a favorite of mine, as well as Elvis Costello and Neil Young.
