15 minutes of playing the same pattern with 50 rides. Not the most riveting youtube fodder, but perhaps enlightening. Only Zildjians, but the results didn't shock me after my latest aquisition. I think my favorite all around ride was the very first one - Zildjian A medium 20". And I'm kinda glad I never got around to picking up a flat ride - don't think it would've been my thing, and might be hard to move on Craigslist (cause it's not a lot of people's thing). Also no big shocker on the K-customs (again, not a fan, but I think my for sale on local craiglist for $80 K custom with a bite taken out of it sounds better for what it does - it's an unstoppable ping that wouldn't wash if you threw it in the swirl pit below Niagara falls.)

Thanks, interesting video. great comparison tool.
That K flat ride, wow, how quiet can a cymbal be? seemed like he was playing air.
The 20 and 22 A mediums were nice, and I quite liked the the 20 K, and the Avedis as well.

Edited to be more fair to the creator and realistic\honest as to my perspective:

Definitely give the guy credit for putting this project together. Must have taken hours and hours of effort. Nice video production etc. 50 cymbals? Exhausting-physically and financially...lol.

But I only made it about 3 minutes in. I have watched\listened to a lot of this type of video, but I don't think I have heard one that failed to represent a cymbal's characteristics for *my* needs like this. Very heavy kit mix, cymbals held tight by a felt, no real "pattern", (seemed like) more emphasis on crashing the rides than riding the rides. At least we know what the bells sound like, lol. Impossible for me to really pick out how the cymbal would react in a lighter context so I would need to seek out other samples.

I would not recommend using this video for the only reference before buying any of the cymbals shown. Thankfully there are additional resources available to help us out in our quest.

I disagree. Besides all the obvious limits----one can still hear---how each cymbal----reacts in this limited situation. That's ok. So within that limit----each cymbal----gets displayed. It's not bad. It's enough--to to tell- the difference---in the models..
Some models, of which likely to never come across; all in one shot one place. Not bad.

Should have went past 3 minutes Mongrel as he got into every K line- gotta give some credit for that. Overhammered vs Renaissance...and all the rest...all in one place. Not bad.

You are right JDA, and I may go back to it at some point. I guess my "review" was a bit biased. I could have made that more obvious. I can get specific cymbal samples-on an as needed basis that better suit *my* needs-but my needs are not the same as everyone else's-so my apologies. It is hard for me to fully hear a cymbal's characteristics through a hammering snare and booming bass drum like that. Not saying this doesn't work and have value for someone who plays in that style-I am sure it does. But I want to hear a cymbal in it's full dynamic spectrum-before the kit is introduced...like the Memphis Drum Shop example.

I play in a lot of acoustic settings and use my cymbals for accents and patterns in that context. I *need* to hear what that ride will sound like-if it is the loudest aspect of a particular piece and not buried under such a heavy sounding kit.

Shortcomings aside - it really does help narrow the scope if you're going 'what should I even be looking for?'.

He mentions a "Jazz " setting another display (where the Flats could have gone btw) in comments. But I don't haven't seen it anywhere.
(I imagine he's just going to play a Swing pattern at FF but I digress. (maybe not..) but I don't see the "Jazz" one..

Not too belabor the point...lol...

I came across this one and thought it was a good representation of what I think of when I think of a cymbal "sampling" video...for *my* needs (maybe that should be my new signature?):

Only 15 rides but-

I didn't like that he clamped down so tight on the first 15 or so, BUT he did play patterns on the bow, the bell and a crash, all in 15 secs. With 50 cymbals there was not time to hear a cymbal breathe or decay, can't be there all day.

That was an enjoyable video! Maybe monotonous to some viewers but not to me because it gives a nice overview of almost all the Zildjian models and lineups, many I've never heard yet. Good consistent playing as well, the quick samples of each cymbal's functionality held my interest just fine.
With the exception of the MegaBell, I liked every cymbal presented, for what they're designed for and can do. Never watched his channel before, subscribing!
