I had no idea that was on the web; thanks for posting. That was done in 2011, I think.

Very cool indeed - I loved watching that. Yes, over the years, Buddy as a hothead has almost eclipsed his reputation as one of the greatest ever to pick up sticks. I'm glad Cathy is here to remind us that Buddy was also a father, and, most of the time, a good friend to those around him.

I'm watching "Whiplash" right now, getting a kick out of the Buddy references.

My group worked in the same club with Buddy in the mid 70's in Boca Raton. He brought Cathy on stage to sing a tune. She was not a great singer, and she screwed up a couple of things. Backstage afterwards, she was crying and upset, and Buddy was comforting her, hugging her and telling everything was OK. It was another side of Buddy that the public seldom saw. He loved his kid very much.

Other highlights of that night include smoking a reefer with Buddy in the dressing room (Here I was, a 25 year old kid, getting high with Buddy Rich! Believe me, it was memorable). During his second set, Buddy invited drummers in the audience to sit in. Duffy Jackson played. Mel Brown was in Ft. Lauderdale with The Temptations, and he was there to see Buddy on his night off. Buddy invited him up, and he played great. Mel is an excellent jazz drummer.

After Mel played, Buddy took the mike and told the audience, "That's Mel Brown, the drummer with the Temptations. They can't sing, but he can play." Thanks to Buddy, I was pretty stoned at that point, and I was laughing my ass off.

I love all the Buddy stories. He was just bigger than life.

I was actually there the night that they recorded Cathy singing "The Beat Goes On" (Big Swing Face) at the Chez in Hollywood. She was 12 years old, and Judy Garland was sitting in the front row. That must have been unnerving.

Thanks CSR,, great video.

Yep, that sounds exactly like Buddy. :)

I am curious as to what Cathy does for employment. Does she just do the Buddy Rich thing only or does she have other income sources ?
I see on her Facebook page she refers to having attended Harvard Law School.

Holy tranquilizer pill, Batman! Unnerving, no doubt. I've heard that recording many times and didn't know these things. Kathy sounds very good and mature beyond her years on it.

But to me it's utterly mind-blowing that you were there for this! Now, that's cool.

Just wondering. Who was Cathy's mom? Don't ever hear about that.
Cathy's mother is former dancer and showgirl Marie Allison who was married to Buddy.

wouldn't it be great if Cathy posted all those family photos and videos to the web?
