Dark Rides at medium weight

50's or 40's A's in a 22" at 2500-3000 gm will give you a dark tone. Large stamps, trans stamps, and probably even some late 50's small stamps.

We’re large and small stamps manufactured differently? I always thought they were made similarly. You seem less convinced the small stamp would deliver the dark sound than the large stamp

Well, we can figure the late 50's small stamps were for the most part completely machined hammered. There's at least a "discussion" on the large stamps on how much hand hammering they may have received.
The lathing on the bells of the SSA small stamps, and early Zildjians is finer and probably contributes to a different sound. The SSB's and later were more deeply lathed into the bell. From what I've seen from most large stamps vs small stamp rides I tend to think the manufacturing is somewhat different....bells, hammering, lathing. One thing complicating that matter is that lack of 22" 50's small stamps. You can find plenty of 20's to compares against 20" Large stamps. But very few 22" SSA/SSB small stamps to compare against 22 Large Stamps. In any event, the differences are on the small side.

Based on that recording that cymbal doesn't seem to have a 50's dark quality to it. Pretty bright and "tingy." More like a 60's sound imo. Looks to have an umbrella shape which would raise the
pitch too.
