Hi All,

This is my first post. I am wracking my brains to try and find out what size thread a drum tightening lug is?

Is it standard, seeing as the tuning keys are i would have thought the thread is.

Is it metric or imperial? I have used M5 washers befor but and M5 nut will not fit.

HELP!!

12/24 is what seems to be the normal thread size on modern drums.

DW uses a different standard and some import bass drums also have a different thread but 12/24 thread is the standard for T-rods for American (and most major brand import) drums. Older Premier and/or Sonor might be different.

What brand of drums are you working with?

Cheers guys!! I'm working with Mapex.

Your answers are a great help......Being a limey thought i have one question.......WTF is 12/24?!?!

Guessing it is an imperial size? Do you guys have variations on this? For example we have fine and course threads in our imperial sizes.

If i ask for 12/24 thread are people going to know what i mean from that info? Obviously i will give then the length and thread length too.

Many thanks for your advise guys.

And thanks for the warm welcome!

12-24 is a system of measuring American thread gauges. Simply put, 12 indicates diameter of threaded shaft and 24 indicates the amount of threads per inch. (If my memory serves correct  )

12/24 is ... 12/24. The first number - 12 - is the size designation, and the second number - 24 - is the number of threads per inch. It is a less commonly used size here in the States, which makes it a little bit of a pain to find sometimes. Anyone that is knowledgeable about thread sizing should be able to help you.

Unless you're planning on having a machine shop make you some T rods I'm not sure why it matters. Just buy standard rods in the appropriate length from any source and they will have the correct (12/24) thread unless they are DW rods (I think those are "fine" pitch ie: 12/32). I'm pretty sure Mapex uses the same standard rods as everyone else.

Oddly I don't think I've ever run across 12/24 nuts or bolts in any hardware store, yet 12/24 taps and dies seem readily available.

Also, keep in mind that some older Japanese bass drums use 6 mm tensions rods which are slightly larger than the standard sized 12/24 tension rods. Gibraltar still sells these.

I sometimes see the 6 mm tension rods on ebay and I wonder how often people buy these for their drums by mistake.
