The rugs sold as "Drum Rugs" at Sweetwater and other places id what I am referring to. Will the bass drum pedal pointy floor spurs (DW 5000s, etc) poke thru and will require a layer underneath to avoid damage to a floor? Or are the rugs made to avoid such?

Go to Home Depot/Lowes and buy a rug for much less..any good rug, especially indoor/outdoor would work fine, or a large rubber mat...if you feel you need one.
If spurs have rubber feet/tips they won't penetrate
In 60 years of drumming, never used a rug, unless provided where I was at...save money, don't fall for gimmicks.
Just my 2 cents.

My experience has been very different from Gcort49. I tried ropes and chains to keep bass drum and hihat in place without success starting in 1964 until someone sent me to a carpet store for a remnant, which ended my troubles immediately. I have used them ever since. I've used various rugs over the years, and several years ago sprang for a Wolfpack drum rug, and hope it lasts as long as I do.

The rubber backing helps with keeping spur points away from wood floors, and also prevents moisture from penetrating in either direction, and the acrylic (I think) fibers shed water easily and dry quickly. It's resistant to stains, dries quickly when it does get wet, and pedals, including hihat and remote bass drum pedal, sit securely. It's also big enough to accommodate a pretty large kit if needed. It's plain black, so not as pretty as the oriental style rug I used to have, but hoses down for cleaning when necessary and takes minimal space in the car. At $70 (IIRC) it's the most expensive rug I've used, but if something happened I'd buy another one the next day.

Most modern spurs have rubber feet that can be adjusted to limit how much of the pointy spike is exposed to prevent it from poking through a drum rug.

One thing to consider is the type of flooring you're trying to protect. We just had luxury vinyl planking installed in my drum room. The installer warned us not to use throw rugs with rubber backing since it can cause discoloration. My plan is to buy a remnant with cotton backing at a local flooring store and have the edges bound.

I have the gig rug with the wooden block on the front. It’s a necessary part of my equipment. If I’m on a floor I need to be careful of I either extend the rubber feet or put an additional rug underneath.

Short answer - Spikes will penetrate a single layer rug if longer than the run thickness.

I’ve never taken the boots off-
Rock solid on any rug. Bass looks back at me and says , pffft that’s all you got?

Never had a problem with Protection Racket Drum Rug. And never slips due to gel-like base - apparently they are favoured as floor coverings for the back of pick up trucks - mine got accidentally sold for this but I managed to locate the buyer who, luckily for me agreed to sell it to me for the ultra cheap price he had paid.

The rubber feat of my drums and hardware don't move on the outdoor rug I bought at Home Depot. If you're heavy footed and playing a pedal that has a pointed metal spur, you might just break through a drum rug. The spur is acting as an awl.

The floor spurs on a bass drum pedal are not long enough to poke through a rug once set up to serve their purpose.

With that said, doesn't the weight of your bass drum prevent your pedal from needing to use the spurs?
I don't need them.

I don't believe I'm foolish enough to fall for gimmicks. I've played close to 50 years and been around the horn. So I will disregard your comments. With that said, In the past, I've always used home store rugs with a standard indoor floor mat (rubber backing) underneath to protect the floor. The DW 5000 (at least mine) double pedal has pointy spurs (along with some velcro strip) to hold the pedals in place. Just curious if the so-called "drum rugs" have a backing thick enough to stop the spurs from poking thru.

Never said you were foolish.
Never meant for it to sound personal. If you took it that way, no insult intended.
Carry On!

I posted this here (Oct 2022) about a rug to gig with:

I like the looks of an old oriental carpet under drums, but they can be heavy, dirty, slippery, and not nice outdoors in wet weather.

For a drum rug, you can't beat an Enviroback Charcoal 60 in. x 36 in. Recycled Rubber/Thermoplastic Rib Door Mat $21.97 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Traffic...c-Rib-Door-Mat-60-443-1902-30000500/202072107

It's durable, cleanable, and prevents slippage of drums and hardware, it's not particularly heavy, it's not distracting (no odd colors or patterns), and it's made of recycled materials.

My Canopus Bop kit and lightweight hardware (but for my throne) fits on it fine. I've used it on turf, wood decking, concrete, and gravel.

The rubber feat of my drums and hardware don't move on this rug, but I don't think a spur set at an incline would go through it; to penetrate this rug, my guess is that you you'd have to orient the spur head-on and apply pressure, using it effectively as an awl. With apologies, I won't be conducting this experiment for you!
This!!

Good point. To be honest I barely have the spurs extended. I’d probably be fine just removing them
