I was driving today, and a talk radio guy was ragging on Rush and said the only good thing about them was Neal Peart (purt). A caller corrected him and said "peert." Got me to wondering (ran a few red lights), I've heard these guys' names pronounced different ways over the years:

Ian Paice
Carmine Appice (Bob C.'s book says "a-peese," I think, but I've heard his brother say different)
Carter Beauford
Vinnie C.
Terry Bozzio (long "o")
Ndugu Chancler
Ray Bauduc
Carter Beauford
Vernel Fournier
Steve Smith (kidding)

others?

Top of my list......

Vinne Colaiuta

 Is it Call E UTA????

Carmine and Vinnie apparently pronounce their last names differently, and I have heard that neither one is correct!

assuming the lyric in the Frank Zappa song "Catholic Girls" is accurate, that would be correct

As a drummer with a hard-to-pronounce name, I can relate to this topic. :)
Here is what I've heard:

Ian Paice: pronounced "Pace." This was what I heard on the "Not for the Pros" DVD. Plus, his nickname in the band is "Paicey," pronounced "Pacey."
Carmine Appice: I've also heard "A piece". I think I heard this on the new Hudson Rock drum solos DVD.
Carter Beauford: I've heard it's pronounced "Bo-ford."
Vinnie C.: I've heard it pronounced many times as "Cole-aye-you-ta."
Terry Bozzio: I've actually heard the long and the short O here. I have no idea.
Ndugu Chancler: I've heard it pronounced by Carlos Santana as "En-doogoo."

NOW...how do you pronounce my last name: Surgener? :D

Travis Barker...now that's a hard one! :p

Seriously though, how about Steve Negus? Is it "NEE-gus" or "NEGG-us" or maybe "ni-GUS" or "ni-GOOSE"? I pronounced it the first way. But then again, his band "Saga" could be pronounced either "SAG-uh" or "SAW-guh". :drunken:

Here's another hard one: Sheila E.

Back in the day, MD gave away a free "45" (you youngsters won't know what I mean) with Terry B doing some stuff. He introduced himself as "Hi, this is Terry Bozzio" with the Bo rhyming with go and a short "o" (the first one, not Bozzioooooooooo).

Bill Bruford,be surprised how that name gets butchered.Johnny Badenjek(Mitch Ryder).

Steven Drozd.

Is it "droh-zd" or "drah-zid" or some strange combination of the two?

How about Manu Katche? I know I'm missing some accents, but I could never figure out how to pronounce that one

"surgeon-er"?[/quote]

Bingo! :D I've heard everything from "Sugar-nor" to the all-too-often "Sturgener."
Where'd you get the "T?"

Oh, and I used to work with several Polish guys a few years ago. They told me how to pronounce Mark Brzezicki's last name: "brrs-ses-ZITS-ki."
By the way, Mark is one helluva drummer.

You ""medigans" have a problem when it comes to Italian names.

Appice is "Appeachay"

Colaiuta is "Cole-ay-yuta"

My last name should be pronounced "Chonchi" but my grandfather Anglicized it because "medigans" mistakenly called him "Johnson." Jeez. I like it Anglicized, and so does the whole family for that matter. I've actually had people criticize me for that. Can you believe that sh**?

By the way, "medigans" is Italian slang for "Americans."

Brzezicki wasn't hard to figure out, but that's probably because my moms last name is Woloszynski. Try THAT one!

One of the biggest offenders of the "name that just can't possibly sound the way people pronounce it" is Mr. Green Bay Packer himself, Brett Favre. How the hell does that end up sounding like "Farv"?? I've heard of silent letters, but not letters that make a sound in an impossible location! How on earth is the "r" able to make a sound BEFORE the "v"???
