I always associated this record with Paistes, but I guess at least the heavy ride is a K:
yeah...i knew jon a bit, he was kind of a mentor for a time, and i think he was using K's during that period...certainly his 'sound' was that boat anchor 22" K that only he could make sing! :p he owned paistes, but they weren't his goto's

That's funny-- you just associate people with a certain thing, and they seem to sound like that. Like he's Norwegian ain't he? Well, then they're 602s.

I feel like that cymbal had to have been the inspiration for the 602 dark ride, though that could be wrong too. Do you have any idea where it ended up?

last i heard it ended up with either terje rypdal or jan garbareck...but i could be wrong cause he was surrounded by a whole other group of folk in his later years...we lost touch in the later 90s...he had a 20" OS that was just as beafy that got used a bunch as well...

yeah...ECM immediately meant paiste...funny, that :p !

Jack DeJohnette: Pat Metheny, "80/81"

Paul Wertico: Pat Metheny Group, "Quartet"

Al Foster (Recorded 1987, releasted 1988; I think he was still using the SCDR): Michel Petrucciani, "Michel Plays Petrucciani"

(Al plays on half of the tracks on that album. Roy Haynes is the other drummer in "Michel Plays Petrucciani," but I don't know if he was playing Paistes at that point.)

It wasn’t Montreux - this video was filmed in Reseda, CA. Maybe he was borrowing the Paiste from someone, or just trying them out? He definitely manages to get his Lenny sound on them!
RESEDA?!?!?
The only thing is Reseda was the Country club!
That makes sense because they did have some jazz but mostly mid level rock bands. I did see the Dixie Dregs there in 1982!

Correct - the Country Club! The credits for that video are elsewhere on YouTube, so they might not be correct. But yeah, it appears that a few jazz artists played there, besides the various rockers.

Fredy Studer was the driving force behind the Dark Ride, with Jack as the primary artist testing prototypes. I think they were going for the Tony sound, mostly. Lots of great info here:

Read a few times “jazzers” use the rude line when it was introduced

Any of the Higgins with Cedar Walton and/or Clifford Jordan sides. That 22” Paperthin….
Love this Steve Grossman record as well, Billy thought his Paiste earned a spot on the cover apparently.

22" 602 Medium, Or Medium Ride even.

Paul Wertico an ocean of 602
I think Paul is playing mainly Signatures here. He seemed to play whatever was Paiste's new line. He was one of the first to receive a set of Traditionals too.

Mark Griffiths is convinced it's a Paperthin. Perhaps he'll chime in?
I think the confusion comes about because Ed Blackwell gave it to him and Ed generally played the Medium and Medium Ride. Could be the Paperthin was too thin and that's why he gave it away?
Interesting re. Ed - he also played a Novo China and 13" Sound Edge 2002s.

No, let me be clear. Higgins' 602 Blue 22" Paperthin was much later (early 90's.) He already had the Medium (from Ed) and had played it for a while. Then, in the early 90s Paiste sent out a bunch of 22" 602 Paperthins to various drummers including Billy Higgins and John Riley (before John was with Zildjian, Istanbul also sent John some stuff before he signed with Zildjian.) John LOVED the Paperthin but he wasn't going to sign with Paiste, so he was going to send it back. I played it at a lesson and LOVED IT!!!! So I contacted Paiste and I got it from John and Paiste (I was not an endorser yet.)

The next time I saw Higgins at Bradley's, he had a Paperthin 602, I asked him where he got it, and he said I just got it from Paiste. I told him I had just gotten one from them too, and he told me how lucky we both were and that he liked it so much more than his present 602, (which was probably the one that came from Ed Blackwell.) The next few times I saw Billy with Timeless and then with Cedar playing trio, Billy was using the 22" 602 Blue Paperthin. Each time we saw each other we grinned at each other and made a gesture toward that cymbal. Eventually Billy also got some Trads that he loved, but I still him playing that 602 Paperthin before he died.

Tony Reedus also had a 22" 602 Paperthin (and a whole set of 602 Blues that he LOVED!) Gary Husband is playing his Paiste's on Antoine Fafard's new record Quadra Spherium. (Someone mentioned Rude's) Ronnie Burrage played Rudes on jazz gigs with people like McCoy Tyner. Smitty played Paiste early on too. Dana Hall had-has (?) a set of Paiste 602 Blues that he loved when we went to school together.

I think you’re right. I took this screenshot here:
