Check your head fit all around,
Heads on a 20 RWP are as tight as a monkeys uncle.
never saw a RWP 18" set.
you may not have any head fit issues with those sizes

Ya know I wasn’t even thinking about that . Good question , there’s a lot of glue on it but the shell is relatively smooth .

For sure . Tomorrow they are all going into my shop and I’m breaking everything down . I’ve been a wood worker my whole life . Im going to check everything . Although I could to the wrap I’m sending them out to be rewrapped and f necessary all the bearing edges re cut . I’m playing with house money .

Thanks 84 . If they come out sounding and looking the way I think they will I’m going to pass the Karma on to a 8 year old I teach who’s Mom works 2 jobs and can’t afford a kit for him . My beloved 1987 USA’s with a big old red bow around them for Christmas

That’s awesome. I hope he appreciates them. That’s a heck of present for a kid.

The kid is latching on to Stick Control like no tomorrow . The only education this kid is going to need is music . I still have my SSB’s and my Anniversary's and now these . Time to unload . He’s a good kid kid and practically lives at my house . Thanks all for the welcome . Have a good night .

You could re-glue to keep it original.

Congrats on your score! Sounds like a great project and love the idea of passing on your other kit to the youngster…

I’d recommend some other non-steel wool options though just to minimize risk of further scratching. Lots of good info at thread below:

Funny you should mention that . I use it on my stainless steel pots and pans . I tried it and it wasn’t getting me far because of the baked on dust with the tarnish under it . It’s why I went to the 0000 fine steel wool and although it’s a massive amount of work they didn’t even show micro scratched . I pulled out a super soft cloth that you can get at any auto parts store and wiped them down really good to where you can’t even see thumb prints . If the fog from touching the chrome appears it disappear’s fast ( think mirror in a hot bathroom after a shower ) . Thanks for the kind words . You guys are all awesome on here .

The change in temperature from hot to cold over 47 years up there caused them to expand in thickness and shrink .They literally peeled off in about 5 seconds flat on each drum . I’m a purist up to where form gets in the way of function . It’s sad but it would have been heart wrenching to now know these drums were about to be trashed and the hardware melted down . The glue stuck more to the wraps then the shells . I had JDA in mind and took out a really sharp putty knife and tried to remove the rough dry glue and it tears the inside of the wrap no matter how carful you are . If it wasn’t for the humidity up there the glue would have stuck to the shells instead . Wraps could have been saved .

someone can still use those (the old wrap) (or play with it...) maybe for inlays repairs etc. Don't discard and I know you won't (+/-)

I’ll hold back on that , no rush . When I have time down the road I’ll see if there are good precuts , maybe inlays etc. If so I’ll salvage what is usable and send them to you . The problem in this case is that the glue spots are many and when I went to test it out removing the high spots pulled the glue out of the wraps and cause indentations . That’s a problem because anything you do that involves mating two surfaces whether it’s a drum wrap , veneer or Formica can’t have air pockets . The glue simply won’t fill those voids and you will get peeling and or air bubbles .

Damn.... what a score! The only think that I've heard that could beat that is a story that a good friend of mine, who's a fell a fellow drummer told me. Apparently he was driving somewhere to or from a gig and saw some kind of bonfire happening near a barn on farm. He saw a glimpse of something that looked like a drum wrap and drove onto the property. The farmer was getting ready to burn an old Gretsch kit! He had already thrown one of the toms in the fire, but my friend was able to grab the rest...
