If Buddy were to come back for just one day to see what the heck was going on with this band, this would be the last thing GP would see before he hit the floor.

Cathy Rich can do whatever she pleases but I would find a swing drummer to front the band. There are still big bands and there are still excellent swing drummers. This is like asking Gene Krupa to replace Ginger Baker in Cream. Would that have worked? Baker could probably play swing, but Krupa playing Sunshine of Your Love?

If you want to see how a more contemporary drummer might work in an ostensibly retro music setting then why not send for Ron Bruner or Chris Dave? These are the guys who would be top of my list were I charged with putting together an event of this kind.

Closely followed by the likes of John Riley, Antonio Sanchez etc.

An undisputed legend (Gadd, Vinnie)

Someone steeped in the swing traditon (Butch Miles or similar).

No elderly rock drummers either!
Maybe I should venture into concert promoting, I might end up with $2,000,000 (assuming I started with 3,000,000).

Don't give me ideas! :idea1:

Probably 1000 drummers, including ya'll here that could have played that tune better than that guy. I am surprised Cathy didn't put Nick in there as the heir apparent.

That Burnin' for Buddy Series really did separate the men from the boys as to who can swing.

I don't even know who that Greg guy is.

I found this video:
&feature=related.

Not only can the guy not swing, he has no feel for a funky beat either.

Another reason to disqualify Greg...

“Jazz is an American classic, and therefore we present it as such, without tricks and without nonsense and without funny hats and funny hair.”

Buddy Rich

I find it weird that his ride cymbal is so washy. Is he trying to compensate? I think he's a helluva player and alot of talent there. Give him some time maybe. Buddy would be pissed though.

Also, recording technology has changed. Could that be taken into consideration?

Bullseye once again! Your posts are worth waiting for.

Butch has passed away.

When?? I was in touch with him less than two weeks ago.

He was posting on FB about 8 hours ago so I feel optimistic that he's still among us.

Incidentally; I can confirm that the Ludwig set used by Pooter (that's not a typo, prize for the first person to make the connection) on the London event was most definitely not one of Buddy's.

Literally days before the show I was made aware of two people trying to source Ludwigs in 24, 13, 16, 16. My understanding is that drums were found and hastily rewrapped. The photos from the gig show the following clues:

Re-issue keystone badges; Buddy's final Ludwigs of the early 80s were all B/O badges. I think they went back to keystones when Selmer bought them out. Selmer did not wish to pay Buddy $50,000 a year to play their drums and that was that. Note there are many pictures of him playing Ludwig circa 1983 where the logo has been removed from the front bass drum head.

Wrap: all the Ludwig WMP of the period has that very distinctive 'horizontal' swirl. The wrap on GP's drums looks like one of the more generic wraps available from Delmar, definitely not original Ludwig.

Snare: the snare he used was some piece of nonsense made by something that calls itself 'Pimpco'. It was a 'limited edition' drum with lots of pictures of Buddy on it and looked to me like a child's toy (or nursery wallpaper pattern).

There's a video of Cathy and Gregg pimping the BRO they then talk about what I guess is a Slingerland set that belonged to Buddy.. One of the comments is hilarious.

This guy describing Buddy and his style is a complete jack ass....... you should not even be near that kit you fool

This is really, really embarrassing. Has this man got no clue at all? The lack of dignity is just very sad. God forbid that I should pay so little attention my children; that they would be so completely unaware of my feelings about my music and my drums and my legacy (however miniscule that should be)

What I don't understand is all the not true, remember the VT with Cathy on one of the 'Buddy Rich Jazz Legend' videos where she said how surprised Buddy was to be offered the Muppet Show appearance. Untrue.

I know his playing is pretty lame, but what if Gregg had a crew cut and was wearing a 3 piece suit?
Appearance means a lot.

The 'Spinal Tap' reference he makes is perfect, since that is where these 2 clowns belong.

Trying to introduce Buddy to a new generation is fine, but why would you choose this guy? I've never heard of him, has anyone else? It's a complete joke.

I think that is a big insult to Spinal Tap. Spinal Tap was satire: Made up and silly. These two guys and this BR band thing is real and they think it good.

There's no mention of Butch Miles passing away anywhere I can find. That's the kind of thing that you really don't post without some kind of supporting evidence. What have you got?
