Hi all,

I recently bought a 70s Gretsch SSB bop kit. Unfortunately the previous owner changed the hoops so they don't match the walnut gloss of the drums. I'm guessing the chances of finding vintage walnut gloss 18" bass drum hoops are slim. Any advice as to how I can find replacement matching hoops or hoops that are close enough in colour? Would it be possible to paint/stain the current hoops?

Here's a photo of the kit:

Thanks in advance!

If you are going to go the DIY route and your OK with what you have now....buy a 2nd set of unfinished hoops and work on them. I would bring the small tom to a good paint/stain store and see what they have or can do for you...with respect to a match. Another option might be to get hoops with an inlay and look for a matching laminate.... I don't have OCD and I think the contrast in your pic is nice...but I respect that they are also not mine.

Just fyi… maybe there was a matching option with no inlay as you seek, but I think the original hoops would have been matching hoops with black inlay or black hoops with a mirror chrome inlay.

My SSB walnut kit had a 22" BD with matching hoops, no inlay. The main issue I had with them was the claws dug into them like crazy, and chewed them up. Though, I always knew where to put the claws back on when changing heads. I wonder if Gretsch now has felt/rubber on their claws? Even my Stage Customs do.
