Jazz Drum Transcriptions - an educational resource - newest transcription: Birdland - drums: Alex Acuña

Thanks a lot, I am really glad to hear that.
You have committed yourself to an enormous undertaking. It *could* be incredibly helpful for many many drummers if awareness of your work spreads. Of course there are only how many different arrangements of any of the tunes - but to know a solid foundation for the standard way of performing the 'standards' - WOW! Alles gute indeed!!

Thank you very much, I really hope that it will help some drummers to be more insightful, especially to make the themes of the pieces more musical. Since there are countless recordings of the songs, I am trying to transcribe the very first recording with a drum set if possible. No easy undertaking.

No. I'm pretty sure he meant jazz drummers. Could you imagine a trumpet player trying to use this book?
Trumpet players use this one. There are very few b-flat drumsets.

Oh the sixth edition. JDA this guy could be 14. How can I create a header for all my posts “ no offense, but I’m gonna be offensive anyway. I’m an old man at 70 I’ve earned the right to my say.“

Edit to add: I tune all my drums to h#. A flat drum just doesn’t sound good. That is H sharp three octaves below middle C. I like my skins to be loose and flabby like my skin.

Dear Community,

I have started a YouTube series called "Real Book Drumming" on my channel, which is always expanding. The Real Book is the bible for all jazz drummers. "Real Book Drumming" is meant to be a learning tool, an aid for aspiring jazz drummers. I transcribe the drum part of the original recording and then play to the themes of the songs, the transcription follows the video for better understanding. Please check my channel.

I look forward to a lively exchange.

Thanks for your time!
Excellent format showing the chart rolling below while you're playing.

I am all for drum education, and the knowledge of how one plays it thru transcription, but without the expression of inner feel for the music, not expressing it, its just becomes robotic.

Timo - Germany, thank you this is great! I will subscribe to your channel. Will you be working on more Real Book videos for the channel? Sounds like it will be a lot of work but rewarding. By the way, don’t mind the comments from some of the folks here.

I totally agree with you, notes need to be filled with life, so I try to copy the feel and dynamics when I play. I hope I succeed at least to some extent. That's also what I advise each of my students when they play a transcription, pay attention to the phrasing, the sound, immerse yourself in the DNA of the drummer. If they pay attention to this, then the content is many times more instructive.

Thank you so much. I try to make a new Real Book video at least every two weeks, better every week. It's a little bit of work. :) I am also always open to collaborative exchanges. I just hope that my English is good enough to check all the contexts. Please do not blame me if I publish content on my channel only in German language from time to time. Would it be interesting in such a case to add an English subtitle?

Not to worry about your English dude it’s better than mine! It kills me how many Europeans are multi-linguists. I consider myself multilingual because my mother tongue is gibberish. Waaaaah! So English is a second language to me.
