Some of you may know that I love old prog rock.

And that means I love odd time.
And that also means I love anything in 7. And yes, anything in 5, 9, 11, etc too for that matter.

But I really do love 7s.

But I don’t recall hearing a lot of that in the general pop/rock/indie/etc world.

So I’m kicking off this non-proggy odd time songs thread with the one and only Linda Ronstadt and “Get Closer”. As an aside, she had some serious pipes, too!!

Would anyone like to share any more odd time songs on this thread?

Tip of the hat to @Houndog for reminding me of this one!

The Wonder Woman main theme for the latest (Gal Gadot) version of the character is in 7/8
The verses of "All You Need is Love" are in 7/4

Honorable mention to "Hey Ya" by Outkast, just because it sounds like such a standard tune that you don't notice until you dig in -- the end of each verse / chorus line is in 6/4.

No one mentioned Possum Kingdom yet, which is a bit surprising. To me, at least.

THAT one is in 15!! 7+8.

Playing in a Grateful Dead cover band I've had to work in a wide range of time signatures. Most would say these represent the "proggier" side of the Dead, but that's only due to the use of less conventional time signatures (7,7, 10, 11). Anyhow, here's a few:

There are a bunch of Brazilian groups in the 60s doing bossas in 5, with basically the Mission Impossible riff:

Milton Nascimento:

A couple of John Zorn things, from an album of Hawaiian influenced music:

And Masada:

Josh Deutsch and Nico Soffiato with Dan Weiss on drums, playing a Schumann piece arranged in 5/8. I played a couple of dates with them when they toured this:

GENESIS IS PROG TRY HARDER DOG

Hey, that rhymes. And I heard it in 7. I added a rest after dog. That’s how it works. Just in case there are any questions.

I don’t regard it as a Prog song and it’s not in 7

Thanks for sharing these!

IMO Nem o mar sabía is VERY reminiscent of Take 5. Almost eerily so.
