I just picked up a really nice 1965 (?) Oyster Black Pearl Ludwig Club date kit. The sizes are 20, 12, 14.
I also got a Canister Throne that has been rewrapped in Vintage OBP. This is the 2nd Canister throne I have gotten in about a month. The other is a Slingerland in white. And, these are the only two Canister Thrones I have ever seen in person. The drums Gods have been smiling on me
. I will probably sell the Slingerland at some point as I really don't need it.
Sometime within the last 10 years or so the prior owner put a Pearl Style tom mount on the bass. The mount is not marked as Pearl and the wing screws don't look like the ones that Pearl uses. He used a RIMS for the 12" tom thankfully, so no extra holes there.
The prior owner really took care of this kit as far as detailing goes, and he thought he would keep it forever and was more concerned about functionality for him than the value with the modifications. He also repainted the interiors. He had Ludwig make him a 10" tom straight ply shell in vintage OBP as he liked to play 2 up.
I plan to put a Ludwig rail mount on it and remove the Pearl style mount. I am thinking of a couple of options for dealign with the holes:
1. Plug the holes and source some really nice OBP wrap to go over the holes. Not sure how I would trim the wrap to fit nicely though.
2. Buy a Pearl cover plate and call it a day, asuming it will match up with the screw holes.
3. Buy some sort of large 1" metal bolt to go over the hole or plastic plug and paint it black to make it less noticeable.
Any other ideas on what I could do to make it look closer to what it originally did?
Has anyone sent off a bass to be "re-virginized". Is anyone familiar with the cost?
I spoke with Jack Lawton years ago about doing something similar to my 1969 OBP kit that has a Slingerland mount, but he was concerned that the drum may have faded under the mount. I don't suspect there will be fading issues as the wrap on this is even nicer than the one my 1969 kit.
The bass has the telescoping cymbal mount. Does anyone know how long that cymbal arm would have been? Or where to find one? Is it worth finiding one from a functionality perspective? Are they really useable? I suspose I could use a metal rod and an old 60's cymbal arm that would slide over it. Was the original a 2 piece set up like I just described or were they just a one piece arm?
The seller included the original straight floor tom legs and clip mounts, although newer leg mounts and legs are on the drum currently. I will probably swap them out, although he said there may be thought there might be some extra holes under the leg mounts. He was thinking the original mounts had a different spacing than newer mounts. But, again, he did these mods around 10 years ago, and he wasn't sure.
Thank you!
