I have recently went full time with drumming and I am now playing 3-4 shows a week. I sweat a lot and it leaves me feeling like crap the next day. Does anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Rehydrate yourself after playing (that's why you're feeling like crap the next day...unless you're drinking alcohol too?)

I'm guessing that milk would make you pee less during the night than if you drink gallons of water. :laughing6:

Drink lots of fluids during and after gigs.
Try some Gatorade type beverages.
Avoid alcohol., it contributes to dehydration..

Thanks guys. I don't drink anything but water and gatorade when i'm playing. Maybe I'm not drinking enough the day of the gig. I'm gonna have to wear a diaper. lol

I know this sounds gross but drink a small glass of pickle juice after your show or the next morning. When you drink a lot of liquids a pee a lot you deplete your sodium, so even when you are drinking water you aren't retaining it well enough to stay properly hydrated. My cousin has her exercise sciences/sports medicine degree and taught me this because it is how they helped football players stay hydrated.

Another thing is to water down your gatorade, the stuff in the bottle is not the same as the stuff on the field. It is sweeter and more of a "consumer grade" if you will.

Get a fan. No - not the human kind - a blow-wind-at-you fan. I got a relatively small, battery-operated fan that I stick right beside me that keeps the air moving over most of me the whole time.

The reason to try to get a battery operated fan is that, sometimes, if it's an AC powered fan, plugged into the same outlet as your amps, it can cause a nasty hum, over the PA.

After using one, I can't believe I played for years without it. It really does help - a lot.

Eat a banana before the gig. Drink lots of water, and bring a fan. Also, are you exercising at all?

Proper hydration is more than slamming a bunch of water on "gig days". You need to up your water intake significantly on a regular basis. Make it part of your daily routine. When I gigged at the beach full time it was hard to drink that much water, but it makes a big difference. Watch the amount of Gatorade - it's mostly sugar and not great for you. A small bottle from time to time will occasionally help, but it's not something you want to drink 2-3 large bottles of on a regular basis.

As a chronic kidney stone sufferer, I am constantly drinking clean, filtered water. All day. Every day. 60-80 oz. It makes a difference.

Pedialite, as mentioned, is amazingly effective at maintaining hydration without all the "stuff" Gatorade has.

I wanted to say thank you. I took everyones advice and had a much better weekend. I drank a lot of water the day of and drank pedialite during my shows. I found out that Academy Sports sells Pickle Juice in small bottles and I drank one of those after we were done. I also used a larger fan and it really made a difference. Thanks again!!

Hydration before, during, and after the gig. Use a small fan to circulate the air around you. No alcohol on the gig! Also - practice economy of motion. In my younger days, I would tend to flail around a lot - a lot of it was for show, and I would exhaust myself. Over the years, I learned I could hit just as hard and produce all the desired tone and volume I needed with a fraction of the movement. That helps conserve my energy and I don't sweat nearly as much. Good luck, and congrats on the move to drumming full-time!

There's water in beer...not much though so you have to drink a lot of it to get the required amount of water :)

Coconut water is good as well and less calories than Gatorade. Apples are good too. Nothing beats water though and lots of it. I hate playing without a fan, even in the winter I have to have it as most bars are heated and too hot for when I'm playing.
