Not to be pedantic, but most of the players y'all are referring to are women, not girls. I realize there is no ill will intended when referring to "girl drummers" but maybe consider the fact while drumming (like a lot of fields) is primarily male dominated, drumming in and of itself does not have a gender, anyone on the gender spectrum can be a drummer.

YMMV sorry for the OT.

Great suggestions here for great drummers who are women!

Yeah, that's being a bit pedantic.

It's not pedantic. Far from it. If people don't get what the big deal is; here it is. When someone posts music or a player they like, if it's male, the thread title is not 'awesome boy drummer' or 'look at this boy go!'. With women, when people post, often but not always, it feels like it's less about music than about some sort of circus curiosity. And of course that's because the vast majority of players are men. That fact is due to a LOT of factors. Not least of which is the oppression of women in our country and on the entire planet. But we're doing better than a lot of places. Hear the news from Saudi Arabia lately? There was just a 'rebellion' by women, who wanted only to be able to drive cars, which they are forbidden to do.

That vid must be from the 90's?
Looks like the same shirt she wore in that MD interview.

yeah warpaint is good, I had a rap guy in the studio sample undertow

That girl was pretty cool.
+...three? on similarity to The Cocteau Twins and + one on Emmanuelle Caplette.

There was a Japanese girl drummer that played in a popular jazz trio back in the mid 90's.
She was great, too.
I'll have to do some research and see if I can find out who she is.

Elvis
Found it.
The drummer is Masumi Inaba.
She's been playing in a Boston based group called "Groovin' Girls" since '96, when they all met at Berkley.
Watching the BET "Jazz Impressions" episode with them on it, now.

...and hey, since no one's mentioned it yet, I'll also give a shout out to SILVIA CUENCA. Super Fantastic drummer. She's had the drum chair with Clark Terry for about 17 years now.
Had the privilege of seeing her perform at a local Jazz club a few years ago.

Just a little update. It appears "Groovin Girls" is no more. I did a google search and the few links there are to this trio are quite old and the youtube link for them above is no longer valid.
Drummer Masumi Inaba is now involved with a "Lunch with Masumi" gig, which is a series of on-line lunch time gigs.
Here's a little taste of what that's about...

P.S. Looks like she's playing on a Taye Go Kit. Sounds pretty good! Might have to look into one of those.

That Hilary Jones vid is really nice. Around 6 min 30 secs she does some neat sub-divisions and I like how she paces her solo in general.

Sara Lund
Rachel Blumberg

Girls, GRRRRLS, Girly girls, Good Girls, bad girls, yeah! Girls! Drums. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Did somebody say "acid"?
