I never followed Taylor closely, but saw this clip and appreciate the raw power and energy.

He ( and his band for the most part) are extremely one dimensional. In my opinion.

Bash, smash, and crash. Basically as hard as you can most of the time.

They do cool covers, and they absolutely murder them; no nuance, no awareness of parts, just beat the snot out of it till it can't crawl out of the gutter. Like a punk band, which I suppose is what they are.

But hey, that's me.

I aware that he's a positive dude, and supportive and loving and caring and compassionate and empathetic, and all kinds of really good things that most people should aspire to. I'm just not feeling the way he plays drums.

Sounds like you haven't actually listened to much of Dave's playing or of the Foo Fighters.

And that's fine!
But your statement just straight up isn't accurate.

It doesn't need to be accurate. It's an opinion. Like you telling me Maggie Rogers is on the same level as Tom Petty. Maybe to you ?

Send me something where Dave's not bashing. I'm fine with Taylor. I mean frack, look at what got posted earlier to try and change my mind.

" he's pretty darn good ..." ( proceeds to bash)

No, saying that you don't like Dave Grohl's playing is an opinion.
Saying that all he does is bash is just not true. It's like saying it's your opinion that the sky is green.

For band stuff, check out the "In Your Honor" double-cd from Foos.

For just his drumming, Dave was actually the first choice to join the Heartbreakers (when Stan Lynch was fired, Tom approached Dave first but Dave declined, leading to Steve Ferrone getting the gig) -- you can see him playing with them on SNL. His work with Them Crooked Vultures, Nine Inch Nails, Tenacious D, St Vincent, Cat Power, and Queens of the Stone Age all show a great deal of variety (along with his work in Nirvana and the early Foo Fighters albums)

Well he IS pretty darn good .. watch that video above again . What are you missing ? He is hitting hard and he is killing it . Is he not supposed to hit hard for the traveling wilbury crowd like you ? If you are "bashing" you are not good ?

He plays lighter in some stuff but that doesn't make him "better". LOL

Is this safe for you ?

what's not to love about semantics ?

Better ? Bashing ? You say potato.. i say potahto

Ill check some of this out. And I'll do a soul searching on my own to figure out why Josh Freese and Taylor hitting really hard are OK, and Dave Grohl on SNL is unappealing to me.

Thank you all

hey believe me.. I am no Dave Grohl junkie or anything but I can't just ignore his abilities.

You can see here two drummers back to back on the same equipment etc.. Is one "bashing" more than the other ? I think Grohl is hitting a little harder but I actually like that because I think the snare is cutting through more as well as the toms compared to Smith. Maybe I am imagining that but I kept changing the time back and forth to compare sounds on identical equipment and sound levels otherwise and it does seem that way.

And is Taylor hitting softer here below than either above drummers ?

It's funny, for some reason I was watching that Taylor Hawkins tribute clip a few days ago.

There's something in my amygdala that keeps reminding me that drums and cymbals are instruments, and maybe, just maybe , some care should be considered. I'm not saying everyone has to be Jay Bellerose.

At it's most basic level, there's not much music that I really like that has that much over the top aggressiveness in it.

We can keep going with this, it's kind of silly at this point. I'm sure other people will keep posting on why I'm wrong about Dave, and Taylor, and Chad Smith. And why I'm wrong about most of the gospel players that overplay bash as well. Which is fine. That's what a forum is for I suppose.

Growl is an idiot and his drumming sucks. Hawkins was the read deal, RIP.

Hawkins seemingly had a deeper bag of drum tricks but Grohl’s approach and sensibility for building parts has always been the hook for me. The back half of Up In Arms is a great example as is the quiet/loud approach on My Poor Brain. I think my favorite playing of his is on that Killing Joke record, though. FF lost the thread with me after In Your Honor but it’s great to see big loud rock bands still selling out stadiums.

All that said Career Rockstar with PR Team Grohl has grown pretty tiresome in the last 15-20 years, for me.
