Hey guys,

I've been jamming heaps on Uptown Funk lately so I decided to have a go at a drum cover/remix of it. This was one of the more fun ones to come up with parts for and it's made me really keen to move more into the funk realm at some stage with some more covers.

Hope you guys dig it!

Nice work. Might wanna dial down the cymbals in the mix. When you lay into the ride it pretty much napalms the whole mix.

its real busy for a funk tune. I know there's a temptation to get all showy in drum covers though. It just wouldn't be appropriate in an actual musical context.

Pop riding the bell at the end is far more musical as opposed to smashing the ride and trying to get a "wash sound" going! I always prefer notes
instead of background noise. (wash)
Good job with nice hand control, nail down the kick and being consistant lends to funk.
Excellant back drop and art forms surrounding you, enjoyed it!

Somebody's funky! Dug the overall playing and the snare/floor tom sweep at about the 45 second mark was well done! As posted above though, the ride cymbal wash nuked the rest of your playing. Other than that, nice job! Would watch again!

jamesswansondrums,

I loved the whole thing. Great time feel. Original ideas. Super funky. Everything feels right in the context of the music and adds to the music, making it better. What's not to like? Yeah, the crash cymbal is too loud in one part, but that's just a recording detail. All-in-all, I think this is a great job. Really enjoyed listening and watching. Thanks for sharing.

Love the chops added to the original funk/pop song. The use of a funk song as a tool for rehearsing/showcasing chops seems to work well for you.

Gretsch-Mapex / Meinl / Vic Firth / Aquarian endorsements are in this guy's future.

Great playing! Kit is way too small though! Darn that Matt Halpern. :)

Finally heard this one this morning, will have to track this one down. I'm mostly a hard rock guy but I have a soft spot for BIG funk grooves (that aren't subdivided into McDonalds minced onion sized chicklets).

Nice playing, and thanks for tipping me off to it.

Love this song. One of the few I'll actually listen to on the pop stations around here. Bruno Mars is great IMO.

Exactly what I was thinking.

FWIW, i agree on the ride comments above me. It's honestly more likely the crash of that ride doesn't really fit the style very well, but I just don't dig it when you're crashing it. Sounds too overbearing with the rest of the song. Much more funky when it's ridden on or hit at the bell.

Off-topic, but I really like this version of the song. Been jammin it a lot lately :p
