I'm installing a 4" acrylic shell on my Pearl Free Floater . What's your experience with batter heads on these guys ?

Not 4 deep but the remo black dot worked great on the Crush and the DW acrylic snares that were 5.5 deep.

What kind of sound do you want? What sort of music are you playing?

On my acyrlic snare (12x7) I'm using a Remo clear CS (black) dot batter head. In the past I've also used amn Aquarian coated studio-x batter head

Right now finishing up an album of Leonard Cohen-ish funk rock . A couple of numbers with brushes which the blackdots wouldn't be practical for , though I do like them on 402's .

Ooh, I forgot, I just put an EVANS HD Dry on my Pork Pie acrylic and am liking the results.

I installed a brand new Ludwig Weathermaster medium coated - very crisp with depth .

Sabers mentioned the reverse power dots, they make these coated so you'd be able to use brushes as well.

Leonard Cohen? Now I'm thinking Daniel Lanois. If I wanted a deeper, looser/swampy sounding snare, acrylic would likely not be my first choice.
That said, have you checked out Evan's Black Onyx heads?

Thanks Ron ... I'm keeping an open mind to other possibilities , but the Ludwig medium seems to work most of the time .

There is a 6.5x 14 Zickos snare that lives in a reh space down the street and has a Fiberskyn 2 on top with a clear ambo snare on the snare side and it is fabulous!! A nice warm sound from what can be a brittle sounding drum.
