So, I'm thinking of getting a cheap cymbal to try and refurbish, any tips for what hammers and/or tools to use, or any techniques to get decent results?

I say this with no experience what so ever, but I feel like a sledge hammer would provide both quickest, and most dramatic results.

pretty sure involves a block of wood two-sided hammer knee pads and safety glasses

Hammering from the top adds ping and from the bottom adds wash to the cymbal.

And no, I am not a cymbal smith, obviously! Just speaking from trial and error, mostly error....

This is weird I was always told
The opposite. Top hammering to keep
Ping and tight and trash and wash bottom and this came from a cymbal smiths website.

Tips I have is make sure you have a nice smooth polished anvil actually a couple of them. And a few hammers. Not sledge hammers ball peen hammers and smooth out the surface of the hammer. Different sizes and weights do different things. Always always always make sure you have contact between the cymbal anvil and hammer. You will 100% crack a b20 cymbal if you don’t use a anvil and pay attention to making it all line up.

I like using b8 cymbals they’re inexpensive. Literally everywhere and are more forgivable.

Think your job sucks? The hammering begins at 5:06

We call them lump hammers. If you miss you get a lump.

You may be right, I may be crazy, but it just may be me being a lunatic when I decide to hammer a cymbal.

Seriously, yes. I had it backwards! Thx...

Always remember when hammering go soft you can always add more later. You can ruin a cymbal real Quick going hard. And let them rest the sound will
Change
