That guy from Death Cab for Cutie seems to be a really good player -- but I cannot stand that band. Ditto for the drummer in Widespread Panic.

Jason McGerr. His playing on a couple of Tegan and Sara albums made me notice his playing. Not a Death Cab fan either

This Tegan and Sara song is a great example of his tasteful playing. It just flows

For me it’s the drummers of the whole genre of the ultra heavy really fast staccato Satan Reincarnated as Cookie Monster throat screaming.

I feel guilty just dumping a whole genre. This is not like me. I really do enjoy just about everything and I want to find something there. I’ve tried, and I used to listen a little every six months to see if something grabbed me but it never did.

The entire vibe just has no gravity or resonance for me whatsoever.

One thing has become clear though: So many of those drummers in that genre are incredible players.
Totally with you in this. Once the Cookie Mobster stuff starts, I’m out of there.
Also, the same goes for those drummers in hard core Hip Hop bands. And country bands in general. Great players, but the bands are just not my cuppa…

Carter Beauford. I despise the DMB, primarily due to Dave Matthews’ voice. Carter is an insane drummer, but I pretty much never listen to him due to Matthews. Lol

Wow. That took me off guard. An example of what I can only call “Extreme Range”.

This bolsters my belief that musicianship and creativity can continue to impress me even if the genre or song doesn’t.

I listened to that three times. Once was just the tsunami of the presentation; the second was focused on the drummer, and the third was on arrangement and production. If I listen to it again, I’ll dive into the lyrics. So, rest assured even though it’s not my Darjeeling, it engaged me.

One thing--and this is not really about the band or the genre—but that has to be one of my least favorite snare production sounds outside of everything recorded in the 80s. The drums and cymbals in general…. It has some genome editing of real sounds through CRISPR turned into something else.

I wonder if this would pull me in more if it sounded more organic(?) Regardless, I’m forwarding this song to friends and bandmates. I may even be able to use it to impress my son, so thank you.

Or, Lord!, can you imagine if that band with THAT singer did something moving outside of the genre? Booyakasha!!!!!!!!!

Mostly, though, the baterista has a Zildjian K tattoo, so he’s the man, and story checks out.

She’s got a great singing voice eh !!!
I love showing that to people and watching the expressions when Cookie Monster shows up !!!

OMG ! One immediately comes to mind.

The poster child of a great drummer in a shytband……...

Tommy Aldridge in Black Oak Arkansas.

Yeah, totally!

I remember seeing BOA on TV back in the day and thinking...WTF? Then Tommy got a solo... holy cow!

A band that is just TOTALLY unwatchable. So incredibly bad...

That's JIM DANDY MANGRUM on lead prancing.

I don't really care for easy listening or pop music.
Yeah, I especially agree about Porcaro if TOTO is all you have heard of him.

I just do not get TOTO. Miserable band.

Average songwriting, awful too-high-pitched singing from Bobby Kimball (his high pitched nasally yelp absolutely ruined AFRICA and ROSEANNA, their only decent songs), WAY too much noodly-doodly synthesizers...

Porcaro is really great on the Boz Scaggs stuff tho... dude is smooth...

Ahh VB... gone but not forgotten!

Jim Dandy is hard to watch....I've played Arkansas gigs wherein we would open for BOA.
Unfortunately Jim Dandy (and at least one other member) ain't that great, and we never opened when Tommy was in the band.
Jim Dandy claims he is the model lead singer that David Lee Roth completely copied for the persona....he might be right about that.

There are many...
Matt Cameron - Pearl Jam I'm not even a huge fan of Soundgarden, but I like them a bit and whenever I hear them I'm drawn to the drums!
Steve Smith - Journey One of the greatest drummers out there, but the band that he's most famous for doesn't do a thing for me.
Todd Sucherman - Styx Another great, famous for playing with a band I could never get into.

Jeff Porcaro and Steve gadd - both great in my book, but played so much music that while I don't hate most of it, I don't care much about it either, with Steely Dan being a bit of an exception to that (and some of the jazz stuff Gadd has played on - they're good!). I would have really liked to have heard Jeff Porcaro as part of a more edgy, less commercial type band. He came up with some really novel drum parts that I would surely appreciate even more in a less pop type context...

Tommy's coolest drum set also; Blue Silk Ludwig's in monster sizes!

Dunno if this is true but I once heard that he essentially had to 'escape' that band and their crazy manager in the middle of the night...whatever that means! Turned out alright for him, at least, ha ha.
