Ok I've not really played DW's. Do those big round lugs make a difference or is it just a way to look different than more conventional designs?

I guess they make a difference in that they are easy to recognize as DW's. They were not designed by DW anyway. They belonged to Camco and DW bought the assets of Camco when they started.

I own a lot of DW stuff and I’d say it’s just for looks. Most lugs are just for looks aren’t they? They all pretty much do the same thing.

The cool part of the DW lugs is the threads can be easily changed out for the True Pitch 50 threads and rods.

Actually the George Way Drum Company (not the Ronn Dunnett restart Company) was the first to use these lugs. George Way eventually lost the Company to Rochon who changed the Company name to his Company Camco.

Thanks for the clarification!

Those lugs must be available for others to use as a local custom 14 x 8 Mahogany block snare I have uses them ...

I think you could say they're available if someone is willing to buy a real DW drum and remove the lugs. Not very cost effective.

I've heard that DW will not sell more than a couple of replacement lugs at a time. They want to keep people from making knock off (fake) DW drums. I've never tried to purchase any so I don't know if its true.

Yes and no. Lugs need to withstand the forces pulling against them by the tension rods. Poorly designed lugs can pull out (Yamaha Maple Custom). I even heard that Neil Peart's Slingerland toms had this happen, as he had those drum heads crazy tight.

Yeah I get what you are saying, but at a certain level of quality it’s really all the same stuff. As long as they don’t malfunction like that lol.

I can certainly say that the DW lugs won’t malfunction like that. I’ve had 3 different DW kits and 10+ snares over my lifetime and never an issue. I have played the new True Pitch 50 rods for years as well with no issues. I would be so upset if I had lugs that broke. That’s pretty bad haha.

I have ordered 20 replacement lugs at a time with no issues. I’ve ordered plenty of tension rods and hoops with no issues either...

I've never heard of lugs impacting the sound. Though I will say that when I first became aware of DW in the early nineties, I subconsciously thought they had a big, round sound and I suspect it's because of the big, round lugs.

DW snare lugs can be bought without any problem through their dealers.

(broken link removed)

If you want tom/bassdrum lugs, you have to send in your old lugs. This to prevent counterfeit.

The old DS Drums from Italy and Adams Drums from The Netherlands use the same type of lugs.

They do add quite some weight (probably part of ''the dw sound'').
