Since we've already discussed favorite recorded Hihats & Ride cymbals, post your most memorable recordings using one of these effects cymbals.

To get things started, how about:

-China on Genesis' "Abacab";

-China on Queensryche's "Take Hold (of the Flame)";

-Vintage Avedis Zildjian Swish on Marillion's "Seasons End", near the end of the song before a short instrumental finale.

The broken cymbal Bruford used as a "china" on King Crimson's album Red.
Bill talks about that cymbal in his great autobiography.
It was a Zilco with a badly bent edge resembling an Australian dingo hat found in a recording studio trash bin.
That was a great cymbal...

Mel Lewis.With the Groove Holmes(not sure) big band.
Jamie Oldaker on Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" hit record.

Howie Wyeth had a great sounding China on Dylan's Desire album and the Rolling Thunder stuff. I used to be friends with a guy who was Wyeth's roommate at one time, and he said Wyeth was one of the first non-fusion drummers to use a China prominently in his kit.

My favorite use of a China as a crash/effect is Narada Michael Walden on Jeff Beck Wired, Play With Me.

Some really nice Hohner clavinet and synth playing at the beginning too.. But the drumming is funky and great! Listen to the "chorus" .. china on the &'s of the beat.

China on the intro to Rockin me Baby, Steve Miller band. I am not a big China or Steve Miller fan but the effect compliments the song well.
That has always been my favorite, too. Anyone know what Mallaber used??

it was a cracked china, probably a zildjian.
Yep, apparently a 22"...I decided to send Mallaber an email and he promptly replied....

"Since high school ,...I have always kept every snare drum and cymbal ( broken , cracked , split ) whatever!

The China on "Rock N Me" was a 22" split almost all the way around on the outer curve,.....I still have it, as I do the other cymbals from all the other recordings I've made. The engineer fought me to take the cymbal down but I kept hitting it louder on each take. I predicted it would help to make it achieve a #1 status.

It went to #1.

Go to my website ,....there is the only photo taken during the "Fly Like An Eagle" sessions. I endorse Zildjian and I'm trying to change the shapes on some of their cymbals.

Gary Mallaber"

Here's the link to the picture he talks about. It's interesting to see how he mounted it:

I know I'm reviving this at an inappropriate time, but I've been watching the 2002 DVD of the Rolling Stones Four Flicks..

I think Charlie Watts is playing one or 2 china cymbals all over it. He rides and crashes on a prominent UFIP 18" (?) china cymbal at his "left side ride" position and it sounds AWESOME!!!

The china on every song on the band Tantric's debut album. (self titled)
One of if not the best produced album I have ever heard.

Phil Collins with Brand X on the Unorthodox Behaviour album. Great sounding China/pang cymbal. The general public seems to have forgotten - or maybe they never knew - that Phil could really play.
