I'm not really sure what the implication is, here. Are Istanbuls somehow elitist, expensive, for the wealthy, or ???

I'm a big Istanbul fan (nothing but) and am none of these. Seems that I wasn't wording my thoughts very well a few days ago. :blackeye:

All I'm trying to say here is that those spending close to $300 on a 20" Istanbul ride usually want something much thinner than 2100g....

Apparently others disagree with you Ryan. I posted it for sale at $275.00 OBO shipped and it sold for $250.00 shipped in less than 4 hours. Kind of makes me wonder the thinking of some eBayers, but I'm not complaining.
Of course there's going to be disagreement. I think Ryan is correct, actually, when he says that those buying a 20" Istanbul "usually want something much thinner than 2100g." But, as you prove, not everybody! I wouldn't want your 2100g. (Oh, alright, maybe I would ... LOL!) But, I'm SURE your buyer wouldn't want my 1628g. Hence, my comment that there's going to be disagreement. Take a look at the Agop Sigs on Tony's cymbalsonly site: he has a better selection of 22s than 20s, so let's look at those -- everything from 1964g to 2317g. Something for everyone ... at least for everyone who digs Agop Sigs. :) (I know the original post concerns pre-splits.)

The pre-split Istanbuls are excellent cymbals that possess the unique attribute of ping with character. And they have a bell. The heavy and extra heavy rides of the pre-split era contain a warmth that heavy contemporary cymbals don't.
I tend to believe some buyers pay $250-$300+ knowing this or having heard so.

This cymbal tends to be a bit washy when riding, but the bell is beautiful. As much as I love the sound of it, it just doesn't get much play time as others and also the fact that my bass player, whose opinion and ears on the other side of my kit are invaluable, said it doesn't sound as good or projects as much as my EAK Heavy Ride, which weighs just a bit more. I have heard the cymbal played by another and it's great, but it just doesn't do it for me as much as others. Plus, I really need to thin out my 15 ride cymbals.

I hope the new owner appreciates it as much as I did.

I somehow knew I'd eat my words! Glad to be wrong! :blackeye:

I have no doubt it's an awesome cymbal. I'd have been interested if I didn't already have a few 20's (all Mehmet's) like around that range.

Mine is heavier than I'd prefer (2260 grams)...yet I do like the sound of it. Defined ping but crashable.

In my opinion, the cymbals that Tony (cymbalsonly) sells which are for the most part are thinner / lower weight , sound the best compared to the heavier version. I've bought quite a few from him ,an Agop 26" (green label) two 24" turks (custom thin) and an custom thin 26" SE, all sound amazingly refined and with great warmth to the sound.Interestingly , I recently purchased an 22" Zildjian overhammered ride which turned out to be the lowest weight that Tony had ever got in , 2020 grams , and it sounds stunning !

Sorry to dig up the old thread, but out of curiosity, could I please have some help in roughly dating this? Black stencil pre-split Istanbul 20" Ping Ride. Seems to be 2792g. I realise it's pre-1996, but any more info would be handy. Thank you.
