I still have my Yamaha AHM kit (posted above) but I've added these two, both of which are wonderful:

Ayotte with wood hoops, standard bop sizes. I think that's the Yamaha Recording Custom Aluminum snare in the photo, though I used my Ayotte wood hooped 6.5x14 snare earlier in this session.

British Drum Company Lounge Series: 8x12, 14x14, 12x16. BDC Raven snare drum

I guess life really can be that simple.

Clearly I thought it was more involved. Smuggling, forged papers, blackmail, et al ..

There is a bit of a story actually.
The 1st time I saw the kit it had a sold sign on it , turns out my buddy had beat me to it . And was supposed to come pick it up that day . So me being me I text the butthead to talk a little smack !!! He never texted back .
He calls me the next day and says . If you want it go get it , I have too many kits already . So I text my sales guy who’s my buddy as well . ( I have a lot of buddy’s )

And say , hey I’ll take those Fibes .
Hold them for me until I can get there .

I finally tell the wife about them and she says “ Oh honey you are so impulsive and where are you going to put them ? I’m not the kind of wife that’s ever going to say what you can buy ; but holy cow honey you are impulsive .” And by golly she’s right !!

So I tell the salesman never mind I don’t need them . I decide to build a bop kit with a 18” Slingerland bass drum I recently acquired and I had a cool one ply Slingerland snare to put with , I found a 14” floor tom shell and long story short I ended up not getting it through no fault of seller . 14” Slingerland floor toms are like hens teeth .

So meanwhile , The Fibes kit keeps calling my name as I want to really work on jazz chops and in my mind I HAVE TO DO IT ON A BOP KIT !!! . So I decide to sell a kit to (justify) the purchase as I had just talked the store down significantly on this Fibes kit .
I post the kit I have for sale and it sells in like 5 minutes I’m not kidding , guy then realizes we are in different cities and I say it’s ok if you want to back out others are wanting it , while thinking ( you idiot , you priced it way too low ) as my buddy who runs a drum show in Wichita hit me up 2nd saying he’d take it . So the 1st guy says I just need to figure out when I come get them . I say cool and take my ad down .
I never heard back from him and still have the kit . I’m keeping it now …

So I have 7 kits now . And have been practicing my swing drumming darn near every day …

There ya go !!!!

18” bass drum kits I have owned :
1978 Gretsch in natural maple gloss
1971 Gretsch in walnut gloss lacquer
Gretsch USA Custom in silver sparkle
Yamaha Oak Custom Honey Burst
Yamaha Club Custom Swirl Orange
INDe in INDe blue

I only have pics of two of the listed kits.

Canopus RFM 12/14/15 -- my go-to gigging kit.

I was skeptical about a 15x12 bass drum, but Canopus won me over.

I don't like risers, even on a 16" bass drum; but I installed a Sonor riser on this 15" to place the beater where I have it on my 18" sitting on the floor. The riser makes a huge difference with this little drum. Opens it up, and allows for very wide tuning. No muffling, of course. And no rims mount on the 12” tom.

Nice! How do you tune the bass drum?

I don’t have a great shot from the front, but these are my Yamaha Beech Custom bop drums. 14x18, 8x12, 14x14. Got them used for a great deal a few years back - the rack tom has some snare rash but otherwise they’re in great condition. Didn’t love the yellow when I got them but did love how they sounded, and now the colour has grown on me. Use them more for all-round quieter gigs than bop specifically, thus the heretical choice of BD batter head. ;)
