I've tried touching up drums that are scratched like that: difficult to do, and the results can be very bad.

Be careful of a rewrap: that shell has a mahogany veneer as a base for the paint and heads will be extremely tight, or not fit at all, after a rewrap.

Richie...

Like Dan, I too tried a touch up... looked like crap (had an artist

friend attempt it).... probably best to strip the drum completely and

give it some fresh paint.

Peace, Chas

a mate had a good idea, send it off to Highwood to strip it and cover it oin WMP then it'll match the WMP Rogers kit. Most likely going to do that, it'll look the woman body part (i do like that phrase). :occasion5:

prepare to get dissapointed when u have it wrapped , heads wont fit, a sanding and respray is your best option.
personally i would clean the lugs ,and put those on the on the drum like it is now,to keep its authenticity.
the thing has been through a lot its cool in my eyes

As I said in a prior post, a rewrap will cause a problem with getting heads on the drum, in all likelihood...

prepared for that if i go ahead by letting them know that so they sand it down. a chum did the same thing with another old skool drum in need of love.

s'no hurry. thanks for heads up gang.

Richie - don't sand it down! They would literally have to remove an entire ply before wrapping in order to accommodate modern heads. The solution is simple if you use an Aquarian Coated Vintage head. They are -oversized- in order to fit older drums with slightly larger diameters and will fit your drum even with wrap added. No drastic alterations needed at all. I don't know if any other company makes oversized heads, but that's the way to go that will have the least physical impact on that old drum.

I'd suggest leaving the shell as it is, with scars and all.
An original vintage "Distressed Duco" drum usually looks mighty cool, in my opinion.

i have one knocking around so might have a look.i may put the hardware on it to see how it looks.

i'd never do anything cosmetic to it myself, i'm dreadful at that sorta stuff.

WMP Rogers snare would look damn sexy mind, oh decisions decisions.

I'm with EvenSteven on this one; it looks like most of the damage on your shell is around the lugs and heads and these won't be seen once you have all the parts back on. This will be better than most duco finishes after this many years - and you won't have head problems. Like him I also like the look of Duco and agree that a bit of distress only makes it look like its been played like it should have been. But I wonder whether the throwoff you have will fit - the Luxor throw was a different bolt pattern wasn't it? Maybe the butt too? And you'll only be using six of your ten lugs. I guess if you recovered then you could use all your hardware but would you be willing to risk angering the drum gods by drilling all those extra holes?

That drum does not look at all bad for what it is. Just leave it as it is with character! Why make it look new when it is 40+ years old? ;)

practice on a junk snare you might use good quality spray cans with a turntable that's how duck paint jobs were done than clear coat
