A while ago I hade posted about the best thrones for bad backs, and I decided to go with an Ahead Spinal-G. But, they come in round and saddle style, so I'm wondering what everyone prefers for comfort.

I've used a saddle throne for the past 20+ years, but I'm open to suggestions.

I use a saddle seat (Tama Ergo Rider), but the biggest improvement I made for my bad back was to add a back rest to my throne. I can't over emphasize how much this has improved my comfort while playing drums by making me much more stable.

Are those saddle or round?
Mine is a saddle throne...and very comfortable. Here it is with my 1966 Rogers Headliner outfit.

It really depends on what fits you the best. If possible, try them out. I know drummers with back problems where a good tractor style seats work best. I also know drummers where a good round seat works the best. It depends on so many things; body type, weight, height etc. that it’s difficult to recommend one type.

I did have an accident with my lower back in the 90’s. I had difficulties sitting for 2-3 hour long gigs. A SoundSeat saved my back. Forced me to sit with a good posture. These days I still use it and also Tama 1st chair saddle type. Never liked a back rest but for some it’s brilliant.

I like round seats - I think they provide more surface area support. Maybe more versatility, too. I can sit on the front edge of it if I need more leverage or there’s lots of footwork happening in the music. Can also sit further back on the throne for more support. I can’t really do that on a tractor style.

Also like locking spindle seats. The nitros spin and bounce too much for me. Other people love that feature but it’s not for me. Same issue with softer / plush seats - they “give” too much and I always feel unbalanced on them.

I use a DW 9000 - very firm, stays in place, and no more back/hip issues.

Stats: 50 years old (with lots of mileage). 6’3” / 1.9M, 210 lbs / 95kg, Libra.

I've found that round seats are best because you can sit further back and have the seat support both legs.
Sitting back with a round stool to support your legs prevents you from needing to use either leg to keep you from "falling" forward.

Roc-n-Soc tractor seat w/backrest. -- most certainly best part is the backrest.

Round seat for many of the reasons already mentioned.

I blew out a couple of discs years ago (resulting in steroid injections) and still have some minor issues from all that, including numbness in my right leg/foot. Round seats have always worked best for me considering the different positions I can get.

I like the basic Tama throne (HT130?), but I'm 5'9", 155lbs, so the 13" seat works fine. I have the DW seat mentioned above and with it's 14" seat feels great to me as well. I'd gig with it but it weighs a ton.

For a person with back issues, the saddle/ tractor/bicycle style is the best way to go. For normal people they can use a round seat. But when back issues creep in the saddle style works best. First, it helps give your legs leverage in a way a round seat can't. That takes effort away from your lower back muscles, and you can play longer with less pain doing that. Also swiveling helps with back problems, too, because you're not tourqueing twisting your back from side to side. Also a round seat digs into your sciatica nerves on your lower legs, compounding the problem for those of us with back issues. I have the worst back you can imagine. I can't sit on a round seat more than 30 minutes. I can sit on my Roc n Soc for several hours straight and be virtually pain free. I chose Roc n Soc it is sorta the defacto standard. Often copied never duplicated. The seat is ergonomically designed. I use the Nitro which allows instant adjustments. Saddle seat. Done.

I have 3 herniated disc's and degenerative disc disease, I switched to the saddle for comfort. Sometimes I wish I got the back rest, but I have two saddles for both of my sets and never use the throne except for a table.

Roc & Soc saddle (I have no back rest) works for my occasional bad back. By the time I lug my stuff (4 drums, cymbal bag, hardware bag) to the gig, my back is loose and ready to play, and afterward, after load out, I am back to "normal".....

Here we go. An answer that won't help you decide, because both round AND saddle/motorcycle are getting recommended. All I'll say is that my indented moto-style works GREAT on my bad back. I don't like the round style at all. Not comfortable for me.
