Production:
Foie gras is produced by force-feeding ducks or geese, a process called gavage.
A tube is inserted down the bird's throat, and a large amount of food, primarily corn, is administered several times a day.
This process causes the liver to enlarge significantly, sometimes up to ten times its normal size.
The enlarged liver is then harvested and prepared for consumption.
Ethical Concerns:
The force-feeding process is considered inhumane by many animal rights organizations, leading to bans and restrictions on production and sale in various places.
Organizations like PETA and Animal Equality have highlighted the cruelty involved in foie gras production.
These concerns include the potential for injury and suffering during the force-feeding process, as well as the conditions in which the birds are kept.
Legal Status:
Many countries, including the UK, have banned the production of foie gras due to animal welfare concerns.
Several cities and regions have also banned the sale of foie gras, including California and New York City (though the ban in NYC has been struck down by the state supreme court).
However, foie gras production and sale are still legal in many parts of the world, including France.
Very cruel - can't believe that people are ok with this.
