Speaking mostly for bands and combos.

The "who sold the most kits" inspired me to ask ...

What is an iconic musical instrument? Maybe another way to ask, what is one of the most easily recognized instruments you might see on stage?

My opinion....

Beatle bass. Most everyone in my early years of forming bands wanted a Beatle bass. One of my first bassists actually had one. Right handed however. :)

I think it's one of the easiest musical instruments to spot.

I'd say it's got to be a Les Paul or Strat, but I give a slight edge to the Les Paul.

It has to be a toss up between a Les Paul and a Strat. These are guitars none musicians know.

With that said, be specific. Is it a standard or something else for LPs? For Strats...again what flavor?

To my knowledge a beatle bass is a beatle bass. The shape and styling are all its own. Another might be the Ric bass. Again, a style all it's own. But musicians and non-musicians alike can recognize the beatle bass. Again, just my opinion but I bet if you ask anyone they would know.

Oh I don't think the average person can tell the difference between a Classic vs Studio vs Standard Les Paul, but it is the shape :)

Bagpipes.

To a non musician I would have to say the Stratocaster. At the least they would know it’s an electric geetar! Second place goes to the harmonica

I kinda like taking this questions and elaborating into what're the most signature instruments of famous players?

Drum sets: Ringo's BDP, Bonhams kits, taylor hawkin's bass drum heads, Tommy Lee's rotating drum kit, Barkers flat rack toms, copelands octobans.

Guitars: Zakk Wilde's yellow & black swirl guitar, slash's cigarette burnt guitar, grohl's satin blue hollow body.

Elton John's big red piano

I like this take too. Following that definition I’d add

drums: dj fontana’s hair on head gretsch’s with elvis, Lar’s white tamas, and Keith Moons Pictures of Lily

guitars: Randy Rhodes Polka Dot V, EVH Frankenstein, Bo Diddley’s rectangle Gretsch and Dimebag’s Dean

Bass: McCartneys Hofner, Lemmy’s Ric and Dusty Hill’s fuzzy thing

and Piano has to be Liberace’s rhinestone grand

I hated that Hohner bass Paul played. It seemed like a toy, not a serious instrument for rock & roll.

I kind of think it's a toss-up between the Les Paul and Strat. The Rickenbacker bass is a close third.

Jimi Hendrix's Fender strat or any strat-shaped guitar.
Almost everytime I go to a music store I hear a kid saying to his parents:
- (Kid) I want that guitar with the horns!
- (Parents) Do you know that guitar was the one played by Jimi Hendrix?
