I don't have a Stage Custom kick but prefer 18" kick drums.

I mostly use Remo PowerStroke P3 Clear Black Dot batter with Ambassador/Logo head on the reso side.

I have a MCA with coated ambassador as batter and regular ps3 black yamaha head.

I’m waiting for the N77024038 Fiberskyn logo head to come in.

I just got a set of Stage Customs but went with the 20". I already have an 18" (another brand) that I like.

The 6 lugs on the 18" SC turns me off. It makes the drum look really cheap. C'mon, Yamaha, how much $$ are you really saving on those 4 lugs and claws??

Plus retailers frequently advertise the 18" but show photos of a 20" SC bass. This leads folks to believe that an 8 lug 18" SC bass drum really exists. But it doesn't.

Here is an ad from Thomann (European distributor) for an SC 18" (but the picture really shows a 20" drum)

I agree. Its poor marketing. I purchased the 18 used for 130 bucks because I have a manu cache jr with a 16 and the 16 sucks.

I've owned an 18" SC bass drum for over a decade now. It's a great kit! I'm running a Fiberskyn front head and the original Yamaha (I think it's a Remo UT or something) clear batter head.

I converted a 16x18 late 80's Classic Ludwig floor tom to bass and love it. Take your pick of drum heads as long as it's a PS3 for me. Right now I'm using Fiberskyn PS3 on the reso side and Clear PS3 on the batter side.

I hear what you're saying and I was a bit taken aback to see a 6-lug SCB 18" BD when I pulled it out of the box for the first time (there were no floor models or even photos available of the SCB 18" kick back then, so I had no idea it was 6 lugs until I opened the box).

But after 10+ years of playing it at hundreds of gigs, I've realized that two more lugs do not make a difference. It doesn't bother me in the least bit.

I'm pretty sold on the Aquarian SK10 for my 18 inch BD, but if I were playing a lot of jazz or lighter music I would try something else.

I use my Stage Custom Bop kit exclusively for my bop quartet. So for me, SuperKicks and EMADs are probably not the best heads for that purpose. I run the kick with no muffling, and I want the kick to sound melodic, so I'm running the stock batter head right now with the Fiberskyn front (probably more for aesthetics than anything, but no hole on front head).

Love this! I just put all Evans Calftone on my SC bop kit on the toms and bass batter. Wish they had one with a Yamaha logo for the reso. They look really good. I have to say in the 12" tom and my 10" side snare the difference to my ears between the Calftone and stock Remo UT is hardly noticeable. But on the floor and kick they made a big difference.

I did put one on my snare which is a Yamaha SC as well but I may go back to a steel snare. The sound is very warm but I can't seem to get a "wet" enough sound. Using a Calftone batter and a 200 mil hazy Evans snare side.

Using all stock Remo UTs on resos still.

I have many 18" basses - I love the Aquarian super kick batter and either fiberskyn reso or coated amb.

I don't have an SC, but I have a Ludwig Classic Maple and a Sonor Force Custom, both are 18's.
Both have an FA Fiberskyn on the batter side.
Ludwig has a Skyntone on the front.
Sonor has an Aquarian TC on the front.
Both drums sound great.

And I’m sure no one in the audience is counting your lugs either. :)

I just played a gig last Saturday with my Stage Custom Birch bop kit in front of 800-ish people, and received a compliment from another drummer in the audience, who said that my kit sounded really good. He said he is a vintage drums connoisseur who owns and plays vintage Rogers and Slingerlands, but seemed impressed with my $500 SCB kit. (And he didn’t mention the number of bass drum lugs!)
