Black/green spots on Paiste 2002 ride and paiste Alpha hihats/crash

Hi all,
As you can tel from the title, my cymbals have developed this blackish colored layer on them, ever since i (stupidly) cleaned them with a generic metal polish. The 2002 ride also has got some green spots on it..

Can this be cleaned/fixed? Will paiste cymbal cleaner work? Are there home remedies which can help, as paiste cymbal cleaner/polish is not available in India, would need to import it. Would love to bring my cymbals back to their old glory! TIA

Have you tried a little soapy warm water, just to see what happens? It depends whether you've added a layer of "stuff" that needs to be convinced to come off, or whether whatever you used has actually caused a reaction in the metal. Try a little WD40 on a clean rag too, on a small area as a test to begin with...

As far as i can tell, it is most likely a reaction! will try the soapy warm water and wd40. Thanks for the reply, will update by tomorrow

If you've already cleaned them with something abrasive, you've removed the protective coating. You really need to get the Paiste Cleaner/ Polish and the Paiste Sealer.
It should be available at your local drum shop, GC, or even Amazon.
Otherwise, you may get it off now, but it will keep coming back.

The bane of Paiste owners. When I still worked in a music store, I always told our Paiste owners to clean and polish their cymbals the same way they clean and polish their cars - because all Paiste cymbals are painted with much the same clear coat that is applied to automobiles. This is true of all B8 and similar cymbals, and even a few B20 cymbals.

So, what you've done is removed the clear coat, and what you see is the B8 bronze oxidizing. No matter what cleaner you use now will only remove the present oxidation, but it will quickly return - because that's simply how B8 bronze reacts to being exposed to the atmosphere.

The only way to "fix" the problem is to replace the clear coat, and that will entail completely removing the remaining clear coat, polish the cymbal to perfection, and respray the clear coat - if you can find a two-stage clear coat that will withstand the abuse of being played by drumsticks. And find an automotive refinisher that can properly prepare the surface and spray it. Easy? Absolutely not. Expensive? Very. You could buy another cymbal for what it would cost to do the repairs properly.
