He sure has a good voice.
Well in his 70's and 80's metal/hardrock heydays, his singing sounded effortless even when he added some extra grit for effect. He had one of the best voices around in an era with no shortage of great rock vocalists. As a singer myself I got nothing but respect for ol' Dio, not a die-hard fan by any means but I still respect the heck out of him. Hearing him all young on a syruppy teenage love song like that is sorta surreal, but still You could tell from the get go that he had something special.

Vinny's work with DIO on his solo records is the stuff of legends. His playing was just so good, along with his sound. To me, his drums always sounded like they were set up right on the wood floor and had an incredible sound. His edgy chops and feel still blow my mind. That said, I love all the drummers listed above. I loved Cozy with Rainbow on those classic 70s records and I loved Bill Ward with Sabbath, especially his playing and sound on Heaven and Hell. Simon Wright is a great player in his own right (no pun), but he had the unfortunate disposition of playing with both DIO and AC/DC in their low years, so his legacy isn't what it should be. He is a fine player as well.
This!!

Vinny has that "swing".

Hey, for any of you Vinny Appice fans, he does a live stream on his FB page every Tuesday evening. Stories, gear talk, mini lessons, jokes, Q&A, all interspersed with short improvisations. It's a like a one-man variety show. Approachable and pretty entertaining.

His playing on those early Dio albums worked their way into my DNA from an early age. I only just happened to learn about his weekly stream a few weeks ago myself.

And you get to interact with a legend — nay, a metal god — in a weirdly casual setting. Sometimes it seems like you stumbled upon your chatty rocker neighbor practicing in his garage; talk, play, talk, play :p Fun stuff.
