Two Ride Cymbals?

Three or four. Depends on the set, too.

A bright ride - right, 21-26
a darker crash ride - left, 21-26
a smaller, higher pitched ride or crash ride - right, 18-20
and one below the left side toms and hats - a light or crash ride w/a few rivets, 18-20. Can't have that placement with dble bass but, with single bass I fill that spot.

I think this thread has more replies now than it did in 2018.

Good, I am glad I revived it.

Me too....thanx....

Yes....two different two ride setups... These are sets that stay paired together....
One set has 20 and 22 Dream Vintage Bliss crash/rides (w/15 VB hats).
Another has a 20 Sabian AA Raw Ride and a 20 Sabian Jack DeJonnette (hats...old set of 14 A's or 15 A on top and 15 dark K on bottom).
From time to time I also use a set with a 20 Dream Bliss Ride and a 20 Zildjian pang.

How many of you guys use two ride cymbals at the same time on your set? Where do you put them?
I think a drummer named Elvin Jones used two 20" rides and 15" hats.

Yeah depending on the music, styles which lend themselves to lots of ride like jazz, bossa, surf etc - or just whenever it feels like a good idea - will use 2 rides. A bit of contrast is always good. For the last 20-odd years that's been an 18" A Zildjian mini-cup on the left with 3 rivets, and usually something with a decent bell on the right - again - genre dependent. Both used as crash/rides, ride/crashes.

I use 2 rides on my setup. My main 21" and an 18" that I use as a brighter ride and for some some mild crashing. Depends what I'm playing at the time.

I am trying a 2nd 20" ride on my left right now, but I think it will be too loud for our regular gig. I ride my 18" crash for a very soft washy ride and that kinda works in that venue. The right side 20" Z is always on there with lots of tape, it has got stick like no other, gongy crash though.

I just play at home so I have 5 rides setup at all times. They all double as crashes. I mainly do this so I don't have to swap cymbals as much. They are mostly Paiste Masters, but I'll throw in some Big Beats, Byrne, and Istanbul occasionally.

I used to play 20" rides forever with 16 and 18 crashes. As I delved deeper into jazz (the last 10 years or so exclusively), I went to 22 rides and even tried 24's. I think 22's are awesome and usually have 2 rides - 22 and 22, or sometimes 20 left and 22 right. But they are both rides (or crash cymbals that ride well with a woody stick sound), have bells and dark crashes.

Current setup is a 20 K con medium left and a 22 Bosphorus Turk with 2 rivets right.....but I change it up every few days.....but I limit myself to hats and 2 cymbals - left and right. In a perfect world, I'd just have a single cymbal but thankfully, I am far from perfect!

I remember, in the 1970s, going to see Peter Erskine with Stan Kentons band. I believe he used a 26 inch ride cymbal. It was INSANE, how big it was.

I have a pair of 26 inch cymbals. They are fun to play, but a pain in the butt to lug around. If you play them with the same strokes that you would use on a 20 or 22 inch ride they are super quiet. Lay into them and you can cut through anything. Fortunately I have a bag that will accommodate them, but when you add in hats it's heavy.

I play whatever I feel exited to play that day. Usually I have 3 Rides:

As a main, its either a 24" Agop 30th Anniversary, 22" Agop Signature medium or 22" Craig Lauritsen Kontro.

To the left either a 21" Mel Lewis with two rivets, a 20" Agop SE wit two rivets or a 18" Agop 30th. Sometimes I use the 22" Lauritsen as a lsr cause it weights only 2050g and has a rather wet, open sound compared to the Agops.

On the far right right I either use the 18" Agop 30th or an awsome Agop 22" Signature China.

And for small venues I sometimes use a 2-piece-set up: a super dry 21" Agop SE as a main and the 18" Agop 30th.. Love that combination too!

So it really depends. So good thing with the Agops is you can really combine them as you like. They allways kinda match together.

I've never used a LSR but I often use a sweet ride or Groove ride above my K or 2002 ride but mainly use it as a crash.

Many years ago I read that Mel Lewis only played cymbals that he could ride and crash on. I thought that was an interesting idea and decided to give it a try. I now play with 3 such cymbals. It’s nice to have variety in ride cymbal tone and volume for different parts of the song form.
